It's great that this TRO will issue. The lawyers and plaintiffs deserve tons of credit for making this happen.

But why is Judge Ellis walking back the position of the DOJ and at least one federal appellate court that journalists can't be dispersed at protests?

The judge finds that because "defendants' conduct likely violates the First Amendnent," factors weigh in favor of entering a restraining order against them.

She will not limit the order to the Broadview facility, but will limit it to the northern (court) district of Illinois.

Because I cannot stand even one more pandering LinkedIn message mistaking @freepress.bsky.social for THE Free Press and/or me for CBS sellout Bari Weiss, please read this piece by @timkarr.bsky.social explaining what our Free Press stands for - and against. www.freepress.net/blog/this-fr...

While Bari Weiss borrowed our name, our two organizations could not be more different. Here’s why.

Jamming cell phones in prisons isn't about crime, it's to stop incarcerated people from exposing abuses, like those shown in HBO's upcoming documentary The Alabama Solution.

"No more anonymous complaints" is a threat to whistleblowers and the public who relies on them to know when abuses are being committed.

Without whistleblowers (and the journalists who help tell their stories) we wouldn't know about botched Afghanistan withdrawal, Abu Ghraib, and much more.

Based on the latest reporting about the Border Patrol shooting in Brighton Park this morning:

A Chicago woman was shot by CBP and is in fair condition.

DHS claims CBP vehicles were rammed & boxed in. Other parties involved say CBP’s vehicle hit a car, possibly crashing that car into another.

This piece provides some historical context and framing around how Venezuelans landed in the predominantly-Black Chicago neighborhood.

IL state troopers are already pushing non-violent demonstrators out of the street and away from the ICE facility. One arrest so far.

Deported for journalism. A denial of due process and violation of First Amendment rights.

What happened to Mario Guevara sets a chilling precedent that any member of the press, who wasn’t born in the US, could be detained and removed by the Trump administration.

DHS response to this + Chicago Headline Club statement on @peoplesfabric.com being detained and reporters being “shot intentionally with bean bags, chemical munitions” by federal agents outside Broadview:

“No member of the media at CBS or any other outlet was ‘attacked.’“
Attacks and targeting of journalists by
ICE must stop immediately!

The Board of Directors of the Chicago Headline Club condemns the targeting of journalists, reporters and photographers covering protests outside the ICE facility in Broadview, Illinois by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and other federal agencies.

The Headline Club is calling for ICE, Customs and Border Protection and others assigned to Operation Midway Blitz to stop this practice immediately. The Headline Club is aware of incidents of journalists being shot intentionally with bean bags, chemical munitions and at least one working journalist being taken into custody on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025.

Journalists have a constitutionally-protected right to cover stories as afforded by the First Amendment. No federal or state agency should interfere with that right either by threats or action taken against working journalists.

The Headline Club demands that Department of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons and Board Patrol Commander of Operations At Large Gregory Bovino take immediate action to ensure journalists are not targeted by officers of ICE or the Department of Homeland Security.

Respectfully,
The Chicago Headline Club Board of Directors DHS Statement in response:

"Absolutely not. No member of the media at CBS or any other outlet was "attacked." For their safety, we remind members of the media and journalists to exercise caution as they cover these violent riots. We have seen rioters throwing rocks, armed with guns, slashing tires, throwing tear gas cans and other violent acts. Secretary Noem has been clear: rioters will not stop or slow us down from removing the worst of the worst."
