Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Forty years ago today, The Pogues’ second album Rum Sodomy & The Lash was released on Stiff Records. Their commercial heights were to come, but this record produced by Elvis Costello, bottled the band’s trademark energy and rebellious spirit better than any.

Danny Kelly’s review of this record and championing of The Pogues changed my life.

I am London Irish and this was the first record me and my old man saw eye to eye on.

After that I realised he’d been right all along.

Rum, Sodomy, and The Lash was released 40 years ago today! I’m very proud to say it’s one of Tom Waits’ favourite albums 💚 The launch party was on the HMS Belfast, in this pic I’ve no idea how I managed to keep the ash from falling but I hope I won the bet! 🏴‍☠️💚 #music #punk #happybirthday

Take a walk with me down by Avalon
And I will show you
It ain't why, why, why
It just is.
Would you meet me in the country
Can you meet me in the long grass
In the country in the summertime
Can you meet me in the long grass…

Very good. Very good indeed. Speaks to my campaign to bring back reminiscing about The Shit Old Days.
New post just out:

"Britain isn't broken"

We have our problems but the doomerism is getting out of hand.

I look at the real picture on crime, migration, social cohesion and the economy - rather than the dsyoptian fantasies of the radical right.

I’ve loved ‘Changes’ for years, think the ‘yung’ Yorkshire lad does a great performance of it here at the Back To The Beginning Sabbath gig.

Goodbye Ozzy.
Wow, that’s beautiful timing with that final show in Aston! That’s a way to go.
I watched the Sabbath set & his voice was surprisingly strong. You could see his frustration at not being able to stand, and his need to share the applause with his original band mates.

I really don't want to go through the whole rigmarole of seeing Farage win power and then fuck everything up and have loads of sympathetic voxpops with dismayed Reform voters expressing their regrets when it was extremely fucking obvious what would happen because his platform is incoherent garbage

Trump's approval ratings are underwater, including on immigration, and Farage keeps saying "Great, let's do that here." Right-wing populism is the gospel of spite and stupidity.
'Reform will cast its net wider, with sources saying the worst offenders, such as Soham murderer Ian Huntley, could be sent to brutal jails in El Salvador, where Donald Trump has been deporting alleged foreign gang members'

This notion seems very obviously bullshit.

I for one object to this locker room language of economic violence.
Does anyone else object to this language, or am I being a shrinking Guardian violet? It’s just so violent an image, I hate it (have some issues with the substance too, natch)

Finally completed a piece of work I’ve been struggling with, booked appointment to see new offices, and read the chapter on Jung that I’d assigned myself.
Rewarded myself with walking on the common & a red hot bath.

Tebbit was one of the architects of Section 28 which sought to prohibit ‘the promotion of homosexuality.’ This law emboldened bigots and silenced many librarians and teachers, including some of mine. As a gay kid I was left without official support from my school. It was terrifying and cruel.

Same old same old - understanding interpreted as “encouragement” - we saw all this during Section 28 - books that talked about the existence of lesbians and gay men being considered encouragements to be gay
Are you OK with books that encourage children to consider they may have been born in the wrong body just because they don't adhere to regressive & arbitrary gender stereotypes. Leave children alone to grow up as themselves not some ideological invention. Ideology belongs in the adult library.

I suppose after the big storm it was too damp for display fights, so the carnival’s medieval knights in armour went on the merry-go-round! They took their weapons. They shouted “for the king!” as they went round.

Then they came home from their quest.

Excellent. My eyes have rarely been so happy
