This is sad, but good: Artists are refusing to normalize this idiocy, and instead of just commanding performances - which they can't do - the Trump people are closing it down and slinking away.
CNN is reporting the real reason Trump is closing the Kennedy Centre for two years is not for renovation: “the Kennedy Center does not have a 2026/2027 season. There would not have been any programming to announce."

I hope all of the reporting on this leads with the fact that the Kennedy Center completed a $250 million renovation 6 years ago that was Congressionally authorized.

Next time someone asks you about energy and land use, maybe remind them that the ~35 million acres that currently grow corn for ethanol in the US could produce ~15 PWh per year of electricity from solar photovoltaics. That's ~3.5 times more than *total annual generation from all US power plants*.

How can late nite TV even begin to compete with this? Turns out Senator Ron Johnson (Wisconsin) finds the law and the 4th Amendment "completely unacceptable."
BASH: Wouldn't ICE wearing body cameras help with what you're describing?

RON JOHNSON: I don't have a problem with that personally, but that's not what I heard what Democrats were demanding. Their primary demand was judicial warrants, which is completely unacceptable.

“To those who continue to work for ICE: Resign. To those who control this facility: Leave,” the Portland mayor wrote. “Through your use of violence and the trampling of the Constitution, you have lost all legitimacy and replaced it with shame.”

"The results here tonight are a mandate for me to work as hard as I can to oppose your agenda, to fight back against where you're taking this country and to investigate your crimes," Menefee said.

"Since Trump took office, Democrats have flipped eight Republican-held state legislative seats in special elections across five states. Republicans have flipped zero Democratic seats.

The average swing across these eight flips is 19 points. Tonight’s 32-point swing in Texas blew past that."
"The point is: a big wave is gathering. For Democrats, tonight is another piece of evidence that the 2026 midterms are going to be a good year for them (if the elections are free and fair, which is not guaranteed)."

Holy crap!! This is what they call de-escalation??

Seriously - how is this not domestic terrorism?
This is just insane. It’s only a matter of time before DHS kills another innocent person here.

One of my "If I had Mackenzie Scott Money" fantasies is "How much of the coal industry could I dismantle for $10B?" You can, after all, buy Peabody Energy, about 20-25% of the market, for $4.4B.

Perhaps things would cascade from there...
New from @gruberte.bsky.social and I in @science.org: The energy transition is at risk, and energy models are missing the threat. Fossil energy networks from oil to coal to gas have minimum viable scales of operation, and those thresholds are closer than we think:

This isn’t about convicting Don Lemon. It’s unlikely that will happen. It’s about intimidating journalists & making them censure themselves out of fear of consequences. It’s about eroding the free press because the administration can’t afford the criticism.
This just in: "Don Lemon was taken into custody by federal agents last night in Los Angeles, where he was covering the Grammy awards," Lemon's attorney Abbe Lowell says.

Fascist much?

Just how long is it going to take for impeachment - if nothing else, Republicans ought to be very worried that Trump is bankrupting the country, including the many future civil rights lawsuits
Not one, but TWO courts already rejected charges against Don Lemon. This is pure vindictiveness, clearly they don't give a shit about the law, or the constitution. www.nytimes.com/live/2026/01...

The charges against Don Lemon are ridiculous. He’s a target because he’s black, because he’s media, and because he’s a Trump critic, and because Trump and his minions cannot accept any dissent. It’s deeply pathetic, unamerican, and lawless.

This is physically unsustainable for all life on earth.

The plans for data centers - if they succeed - guarantee that we burn the world down and blow every climate tipping point.

The fierce debate here is not just about "speed" but about who gets to decide and how we plan the entire economy.
i was actually shocked to see the numbers on new research from Global Energy Monitor on new gas projects in the US: nearly 100 gigawatts of power—enough to power tens of millions of homes—are currently in development explicitly to power data centers. At the end of 2023 that number was 4 gigawatts
