Applied AI Research Scientist | Bioinformatics R&D Manager | Using ML to solve problems in science & have a positive impact. She/Her

Hi! I’m KJ & I research applied AI in science 👩‍🔬

I started my career in software, got my MS in AI from Northwestern, & worked at UChicago + Argonne National Lab.

Now I'm managing a team of bioinformatics scientists working to develop better diagnostics & treatments for pediatric cancer @ NCH
My dad has started saying "rat hole" instead of "rabbit hole" for when you get really into something annnnnd I'm stealing that 🐀

Really not going to get into it, but in 2025 it should be obvious that giving creepy-ass companies more data on you, even data you consider *innocuous*, is a very bad idea. The aggregation of said data, the assumptions made about you, and how that will be used to your detriment are well documented

I don't think there's any task I dread more than email, and probably one that something like an LLM is most well-suited for, in terms of just producing the text.

But if you ever send me an LLM-generated email, I will crash out. I hope you'd respect me more than that.

If you know me, you know that my dog Oscar is my everything. I've had him since I was 22. He turned 11 this weekend and then suddenly passed away on Tuesday. I am devastated.

Being at a point in my career where I can mentor others by validating their experiences and share strategies that helped me when I was struggling is such a gift. I love lifting up other people

Happy to know "vibe coding" isn't a super common term outside of whatever social media space I'm in. Sad to know that I'm the person who explained the concept to my friends this weekend

I always wanted kids but with everything happening in the world (climate change, extreme right wing politics, overpopulation fears I've been hearing my entire life, the isolation of new moms, maternal mortality rates increasing, school shootings, RFK jr getting rid of vaccines, etc) I probably won't

Fantastic talk by @drraymd.bsky.social today about health equity. I especially appreciated this image about equality vs equity and why the image we usually see (the kids outside of a baseball game) doesn't quite resonate with everyone. If you have the chance to see him speak, don't miss it!

This is a really crazy read. I was surprised last week to hear someone on the train talking to ChatGPT on the phone like they were a friend. It's wild to see how that can affect people
NEW: People are being involuntarily committed to psychiatric care facilities — and even ending up arrested or jailed — after becoming fixated on ChatGPT and other chatbots and spiraling into psychosis.

BREAKING: A federal judge in Massachusetts (the Reagan-appointed William Young) has declared the Trump administration's cuts to NIH grants — ostensibly over Trump's EOs on gender ideology and DEI — are "illegal" and "void." He's ordering many grants restored.

So awesome to see such an impressive scholar from Toledo (my home town)! Please consider donating so he can compete at nationals
Last year, I shared a gofundme for one of our students that made it to nationals for the National History Day competition. This year, his younger brother is going. Our first junior high student to make it to Nationals! There is no funding for travel and registration. Please help!

man those critics who called out altmans call for regulation in 2023 as cynical posturing to protect his lead in AI and he would change course once he got there were fuckin right on the money
Senate hearing: Sam Altman says that requiring government approval to release AI would be "disastrous" for the US' lead in AI, a reversal from his 2023 comments (Washington Post)

HIV/AIDS no longer a death sentence, that’s NIH.

99% of FDA approved drugs in the last decade, that’s NIH.

Please show this video to anyone who doesn’t understand why the NIH is so important.
