This is insanity!
Imagine you're a scientist trying to publish a new study, and being told you can't, unless you do background checks on co-authors who aren't U.S. citizens and send their names to national security staff.

Also, studies about climate change or DEI written w/foreign scientists = rejected. ⬇️
The new directive asks USDA workers in the agency’s research arm to use Google to check the backgrounds of all foreign nationals collaborating with its scientists.

The names of flagged scientists are being sent to national security experts at the agency, according to records reviewed by ProPublica.

This approval will put us all at risk. Not even your vegetables will help you stay healthy.
The EPA has approved a new pesticide that contains PFAS, or 'forever chemicals', to be used on vegetables like lettuce, broccoli and potatoes.

“Structural ignorance.” Yes.
Public health depends on citizens accepting scientifically-grounded guidance. When official institutions produce politically-determined science and independent verification infrastructure is eliminated, the capacity for evidence-based health policy collapses, writes Renée DiResta.

We're witnessing the simultaneous capture of knowledge-producing institutions and the elimination of independent verification mechanisms, writes Renée DiResta.

“Ending a $5 million research study when it is 80% complete does not save $1 million,” it says, “it wastes $4 million.”
Over the weekend, I interviewed one of the NIH employees who signed this letter (someone other than those quoted in this AP story). We talked about what they're doing and the importance of standing up. It was a moving conversation about risk and responsibility. Stay tuned for my piece on NIH and LA.
NIH scientists publish declaration criticizing Trump's deep cuts in public health research
Scores of National Institutes of Health researchers and staffers have come forward to send their Trump-appointed leader a letter challenging policies they say undermine the NIH mission.

Thank you @RepThomasMassie for speaking up against such a horrifically bad bill
Last night REPUBLICAN @RepThomasMassie spoke out about Republican debt hypocrisy — as they exploded the debt to stuff the pockets of the wealthy, cutting health care and programs for the working poor. #TrumpsTrillionsTransfer

People should know where their tax dollars are going. People will lose their healthcare and ability to put food on the table so the rich can get richer. We still have a choice. Choose to stay silent or call congress.
Bringing this to Bsky bc @steverattner.bsky.social hasn't posted it yet and it's so critical. The entirety of the cuts to Medicaid and food benefits are to pay for tax cuts for people earning more than half a million a year.

This is a great thread about how much universities subsidize federal research. This post does not take into account computers, software and training expenses that universities incur to support research. It also does not take into account the huge investments needed to get large grants.

This is a very bad idea. The EPA and the research arm keeps us safe.
The Trump administration plans to eliminate the EPA’s scientific research arm and lay off more than 1,000 chemists, biologists, and other scientists.

An important thread about why/how NIH funds are still frozen despite the court order forbidding it. If you support lifesaving research, please call or write your congressmen and demand release of these funds.
1. UPDATE

The NIH is still blocking most ongoing scientific funding over concerns about DEI, according to NIH sources and internal NIH correspondence.

The freeze has continued even after top NIH officials acknowledged that continuing to block the funding would violate a federal court order.

On changes to #NIH indirect rates, there is a law in place that prohibits NIH from making such changes without the approval of Congress. See Division D, Title II Section 224 of The Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 (Public Law No: 118-47) grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings.

But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.
Direct Economic Contributions
NIH directly supports the economy through investments in research institutions and job formation.
