Good news/bad news: I think I stepped through a portal into the ’90s yesterday afternoon at the grocery store. No, it wasn’t the playlist that clued me in, although that was bangin‘. It was the silver Jesus fish on the bumper in the parking lot. I thought those went extinct in Y2K.

Help me, #booksky. Do I need to read the first two books in Philip Roth’s American Trilogy before I read “The Human Stain”? The first two aren’t available at either library I’m a member of.
I don’t like reading a series out of order, but the internet says the narrator is the only link. Thoughts?

The features editor at my first newspaper job almost 20 years ago was the embodiment of the sort of woman I aspire to be. She was no-nonsense, hard-working, and ready to lend a hand, an ear, or whatever body part was required for the situation.

Update: I have one more chapter to go, but so far it’s more realistic than what’s actually happening in the U.S. today.
