There are over 800 literary festivals in the UK. Some are high-profile, international festivals like Edinburgh and Hay-on-Wye, others are smaller and more local. Some are subsidized by local arts councils; some have private sponsors. Or both.

Today in the UK, the Online Safety Act (2023) came into force. This means that social media companies are required to undertake age verification for users in the UK to see "adult content". And who decides what is and is not "adult content"? The social media companies themselves.

Another day, another inexperienced but hopeful writer, announcing that they have “been offered a book deal” for £20,000. Turns out that the author is being expected to PAY THIS to the publisher, not the other way round. Folks, no publisher does this.
