Alright here goes: for as much as we talk about the Grateful Dead as a jam band, when you listen to enough shows of the same era you learn all the little stage tricks they did to make it sound like new territory. Familiar chord progressions, similar themes. They were showmen as much as astronauts.

I've got a 1978-ish recording of a WMMR radio broadcast that's great to listen to for a number of reasons, but the highlight might be a DJ accidentally letting slip his real opinion of a Wings song and then slowly trying to backtrack so that no one gets mad at him.
