the city of los angeles burned in january in part because of a man who couldn’t stop generating images of burning cities on ChatGPT, and then after he lit the fire he asked if the fire he started was his fault

I was dead at 30. I was a ghost. I was a resource for my abuser to extract and didn’t know anything different. At 35, I was living for myself for the very first time. At 37, I got an agent. Life is long and stuff gets better.

When I turned 30 I had not yet written my first published book or my first published novel and did not know (or know of) some of the most important people in my life. I didn't know how much my life could still change, and did, after the age of 30. There is so much your life still yet to live.

Comics/graphic novels aren’t recognized or taken seriously as literature in the publishing industry, despite taking twice as much work to create as prose novels, and it just breaks my heart.

the only comic discourse I care about

A comic titled "How to Draw Comics," in which a serene looking being is stood before a table, on which is a single sheet of paper and a pencil. The being is staring at us.

They then peek down at the sheet of paper, and the POV switches to that of the being, so we can see what is on the page. A single word is written there:

"Don't"

The POV switches back, but is closer on the being's strangely serene face as they continues staring at the page.

They then stare directly at us, the serene face implying the opposite.

Don’t work for a publisher. Being indie is harder to grow at first but a publisher will pay you pennies, grind you into dust and then drop you anyways if your comic doesn’t do enough numbers.

At least with indie you still own 100% of ip rights.

I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. AI is coming for a lot of Hollywood jobs: VFX artists, animators, drone pilots, pre-K children’s creators, clerical crew - but not actors. Not directors. Not writers. While those positions may use AI, it wont replace them. Audiences won’t pay for randomly generated slop.

Seeing filtered photos in comics breaks the suspension of disbelief for me, and takes me right out of the story.

reading a comic and seeing the background be very obviously a photo with a monochromatic clip studio filter and automated screen tone just sucks the life out the comic for me.

like AT LEAST trace over the photo if youre gonna use the photo

The world is impossible to be in right now. It’s impossible to engage with what’s happening, it’s impossible to ignore it, there’s no way to relax and there’s no way to keep the poison out of your blood. You can’t protect your interior world and I don’t think anything has ever been more exhausting
