"'They’re spending more money than I would even tax them,' [Mamdani] said in an interview with MSNBC last week."

This is the message. Make it clear that these billionaires aren't just worried about losing money. They're worried about losing the ability to exchange their money for power.

The entire purpose of the conservative movement has been tearing down public goods and any policies that limit or hinder in any way corporate profiteering and wealth accumulation by the powerful elite.

It abhors the social contract.

Destruction of modern society is the goal.

I gave a campus talk last night on Trump's first 100 days for the WUD Society & Politics group. A student asked me if I thought that, at some point, we might start to describe the US as a competitive authoritarian regime. I said that we were already there, it's just that most folks haven't noticed:

Turns out when you treat teachers well, invest in students, and focus on improving schools, you get real results.

Illinois now ranks third in the nation for our education system for a reason.

What's up with Justice Jackson? She started making her mark and speaking out early, and some of her dissents are so pointed Kagan and Sotomayor don’t even join them. The far right is out for her, and even Republican justices are getting snarky.

So what's up? Here’s my take 🧵

George Orwell, 1984: Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building has been renamed, every date has been altered. The headline is deeply misleading. You can’t suspend habeas corpus just “for migrants.” As we’ve seen, ICE will pick *anyone* up. If you have legal status but no right to habeas corpus, you’ll have no ability to challenge your detention or deportation. Suspension for some is suspension for all.

It was a world historical fumble that changed the trajectory of America in a way we won't recover from in my lifetime.
Every now and then I just pause and think that … we could have just elected Kamala Harris, and we’d still have an economy that was the strongest in the world; we’d still have an American-led trans-Atlantic order; we’d be assured that our universities would remain the envy of the world; … (1/x)

One of the wilder political things in recent history is that Project 2025 publicly released a 900 page document laying out their plans to roll back 100 years of human progress and then during the campaign Republicans just said "no we're not :)" and then they won and now they're doing it all.

Shameful.
Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries have still not said anything about the Trump-Vance administration detaining Mohsen Mahdawi.
The Trump admin has just detained Mohsen Mahdawi, who:
–has green card
–was Columbia Buddhist club president
–saw his best friend shot & killed by Israeli soldier
–said "we are against antisemitism because antisemitism is a form of injustice, and injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"

Even if you accept the premise and decision, which I absolutely do not, it is the simplest thing to phone the visa holder, tell them their visa is revoked and say they have a month to leave the country. Accosting someone on the street like a kidnapping is just a spectacle of terror.
Marco Rubio on Rumeysa Ozturk: "We revoked her visa ... once you've lost your visa, you're no longer legally in the United States ... if you come into the US as a visitor and create a ruckus for us, we don't want it. We don't want it in our country. Go back and do it in your country."

Trump is now directing federal law enforcement officials to seek sanctions against attorneys or law firms that challenge his actions in court.

The admin currently faces more than 130 lawsuits.

The move is the latest action that aims to punish judges and lawyers taking positions against Trump.

This is how our government has been corrupted:

1) Donors give huge sums to elect politicians to office.
2) Elected officials rewrite the rules in the donors' favor.
3) Donors make a huge profit.
4) Repeat.

For the sake of democracy, we must get Big Money out of politics.
