One of the most terrifying, brilliantly written, balanced and relevant books I have ever read. I’ve always thought Rees was an exceptional historian, this reaffirms that view.

“ I still admire the entrepreneurial spirit that defined Silicon Valley’s earlier era… But something profound has changed. The industry that once prided itself on “moving fast and breaking things” now seems primarily interested in accumulating power and breaking democracy.”
“No question looms larger than this—what happens when the architects of artificial intelligence conceive of human values as mere optimization variables?”

Everyone has their favorite pet names for the piece of orange garbage that's currently squatting in the Oval Office.
These are my 3 favorite nicknames for him:
1. Tangerine Palpatine
2. The Tangerine Tyrant
3. Mango Mussolini

Tell me your favorite nickname.

Piracy and memory in AI: a number of LLMs are trained on the Books3 archive, a pirated set of tens of thousands of books.

It turns out that LLMs trained on Books3 are indeed better able to recall details of those books, and that this effect is much larger for less popular books.

I generally agree with this important caveat, but…

… I have now spoken with C-level leaders & lawyers, who assigned teams to check Deep Research. They found few flaws & fact checking took much less time (and less highly skilled work) than was saved by AI.

That seems to be a critical tipping point.
We're seeing the same form-versus-function confusion with Deep Research now that we saw in the early days of chatbots. Back then people were wowed by chatbots' conversational abilities and mimicry of linguistic fluency, and hence underappreciated the limitations. 🧵

If we invent immortality, there should be an extreme sport called "civilizational speedrunning." Teams of 20 would go into the wilderness and race to build the first internal combustion engine.

Thoughts on Sam's post:
1) It echoes the story from multiple labs about the confidence of scaling up to AGI fast (but you don't have to believe them)
2) There is no clear vision of what that world looks like
3) The labs are placing the burden on policymakers to decide what to do with what they make

You're going to eliminate government waste?
Sure, I can support that but tell how you are determined what is waste and how you're going to manage it.

Cause otherwise, it's just talking about firing people.
And I've worked on places where loads of people were fired and I just had to do more work
