🧵Agree great thread, This is really interesting research (and always good to do reruns to track trends). But like Steve i’d also suggest zooming out a little bit before assuming climate scepticism is the new normal. Some additional thoughts… (long thread sorry!)

Somewhat sensationalist headline here obscures some really interesting research - which tallies with other available tracking data - on shifting attitudes to climate in the UK.

Below are a few quick thoughts on how to understand this, in my view 👇 t.co/gDqlQgQBHn

Delighted to see my new book Sink or Swim about the hard choices ahead to adapt to the impacts of climate change reviewed in the @financialtimes.com by @pilitaclark.bsky.social along with @billmckibben.bsky.social's brilliant new book on the rise of solar power.

These have largely been ignored because institutions and politics don’t want to touch them. But as the book sets out, tackling them properly will become essential, and is possible.

What will adaptation look like then? The book identifies 16 hard choices the world will have to confront if we are to adapt well to a planet being heated by fossil fuels.

That won’t be enough. Climate change will break systems. Food production will fail in places, water treaties will become obsolete, coastal lands will disappear, other lands will become effectively uninhabitable, and so on.

It argues that climate adaptation so far has done a lot of good things - and still is chronically underfunded - but has largely stuck to tinkering with existing systems

I want to come back properly on this Economist piece that questions Britain's approach to net zero.

It gets three things wrong imo:

1. Ignoring periods of v cheap renewable energy
2. Misdiagnosing the relative costs of renewables
3. Looking backwards, not forwards.
Is Britain’s net-zero push to blame for its high energy prices?
A mighty rise in electricity costs has complicated the drive for clean power

In last day: Pakistan flood deaths passed 270, Turkey hit 50C & Tampa 100F for first time, study found climate change will increase UK food prices at least 25% in 25 years. Meanwhile, Tories & Reform planning to scrap climate action.

It does and they’re foul imv, but only if you buy supermarket ones (made from coconut). Smaller batch cheeses, made from cashew etc, are often v nice, eg I Am Nut Ok

I don’t think it can have come from the LA fires this year - earliest use of the quote I was able to find is July 2022

Yes - agreed. It’s now locked so I can’t link to the original but lots of people have cited it to them
