Included within this legislation was the Communications Decency Act and the now-notorious Section 230. What was originally passed with the goal of helping the emerging Internet industry as our nation approached a new century has since been interpreted to shield big tech companies from accountability for an ever-expanding variety of online harms. As we approach the 30-year anniversary of Section 230, we must pause and reflect on where this law has led us as a nation and how it has affected the American people. Because of Section 230, America's children are being sexually groomed and extorted online; predators are creating and distributing Al-generated deepfake pornography; drug traffickers are selling fentanyl-laced pills to teenagers; young people's anxieties, stresses, and body image issues are exploited; and terrorist organizations and foreign governments are targeting vulnerable individuals for recrutment and exploitation. And to make matters worse, Section 230 prevents these victims and their families from ever having their day in court. Practically speaking, there is no regulatory agency overseeing social media that could provide meaningful relief to abused consumers. The combination of having the courthouse door locked and no real regulatory body to protect consumers is harmful to America and it must come to an end. The time for accountability is now. Few issues have generated more bipartisan consensus in this body than confronting the Section 230 problem. "It's coming from games I sell on Steam." "Can we see the store page?" "Sure." "I'm sorry, we can't do business with you at this time." It keeps coming down to a commercial decision purely because I make adult content. What the hell am I supposed to do? I've pretty much exhausted the whole banking system. I just want to be able to be paid for products I've sold.

These very true words from Steve Hely have given me tremendous comfort over the years.
Writing a novel— actually picking the words and filling in paragraphs— is a tremendous pain in the ass. Now that TV’s so good and the Internet is an endless forest of distraction, it’s damn near impossible. That should be taken into account when ranking the all-time greats. Somebody like Charles Dickens, for example, who had nothing better to do except eat mutton and attend public hangings, should get very little credit.

I cannot get over how the entire centrist hivemind is attempting to wish into existence a person, and a movement, that does not exist. You are journalists, you are supposed to describe things as they are, not how you want them to be!
I don't think it's simpering praise. He was an interesting man. I didn't agree with much that he said, but he was interesting and he was growing, and his death is a significant loss for those who believe engagement can help bridge disagreements.

Because some people haven't heard it yet: PAYPAL IS NOT A BANK, DO NOT LEAVE MORE THAN A COUPLE HUNDRED DOLLARS SITTING IN YOUR ACCOUNT AT ANY TIME. MOVE IT TO YOUR BANK ACCOUNT IMMEDIATELY.

Paypal can and will close your account and steal all your money without warning. And have done MANY times.
