I don't usually get too worked up about book covers, but this edition of RF Kuang's Katabasis is stunning. Picked this up at my local indie bookstore recently and wow!
The book on a light tan fabric background. The layers of hell are illustrated with lots of color and detail. The edges of the book. The top are flames, the bottom are ocean waves, and the long edge has both with silhouetted figures falling into fire and water. At the center is a plaque: Hell is other people.

Having a book made into a TV show (and then another one!) was never on the bucket list. But since it has happened, I may as well enjoy it. The show is adorable! So much fun wordplay just like my books and just like the original animated show.

The book banning of Indigenous stories in libraries has impacts on readers| Removal of their stories continues the erasure of histories and contributions of Native Nations and their citizens

Thank you @tracisorellauthor.bsky.social for writing this Op-Ed

OPINION: Banning books erases Native voices and experiences
Book banning is not new. A small minority seeking to decide and limit what the majority can access and read has existed for millennia.

You know a book has to be good when the toddler stops his destruction of CandyLand to check it out.

The Book of Rules by @briangehrlein.bsky.social is a family favorite

Only thing I bought at the festival - besides a burger.

He's about 4 inches tall.

Even Death likes a good book.

He's going the library next week.

It was a beautiful Sunday in Portland. Farmer’s markets, the Portland Marathon, peaceful protests, and some views of Mt. Hood. This city is vibrant, peaceful, and resilient. We do not need a federal occupation, and we sure as hell don’t want one.

Enjoy!

Selfie: Tall guy me with trim l’il beard, faux hawk fade haircut, bright blue framed square lens glasses, royal-ish blue collared shirt with white not-quite-paisley-but-similar(ish) pattern, grey (machine made 😢) cardigan with black trim, bright two-toned pink tie with floral print and metallic tinged blue/black and silver/white accent lines and branches/leaves.

Snazzerific! Photo looking down at bottoms of black Jean clad legs and wild zebra-esque print socks in bright pink, black, light blue and (not visible) yellow stripes.

Black Converse were not yet on my feet… Close-up selfie, outfit/appearance as described previously, thumbs-up gesture prominent in foreground.

Text of the fourth amendment “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”

🎃 31 Days of Halloween Books 🎃

Day 2: INSIDE A HOUSE THAT IS HAUNTED by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and illustrated by Tedd Arnold

Why I love it: The bold, super fun illustrations and rhythmic, predictable story engages preschoolers and encourages them to get involved!

for real I think the only thing outside of maybe authors being independently wealthy/famous that really actually moves books rn is word-of-mouth. we (I could definitely stand to do better on this) gotta talk up the stuff we like with our social networks (online or otherwise) haha

A Big 5 editor friend told me that one of her biggest frustrations is that since nothing is really working right now, it'd be a great time to throw everything at the wall and see what new ideas stick. But instead they just shrug and keep trying ideas from 20 years ago.

Got kicked out of the library for a meeting.

Took 4 carts of stuff with me so I could keep functioning for the day - push one, pull another, two trips.

Ppl looking at me in the halls like, “Are we evacuating the building?" 😂
