there are only N art pieces that can be made, so every time a computer makes one, people lose the ability to make one art piece. also, computers can't make art pieces

Just found out about this thing that is contributing to ~20% of the use of this broader thing that uses ~4.4% of the US's energy. I am a tech journalist and holy shit, time to sound the alarm bells on the spectacular energy costs.

In other words, this thing uses less than 1% of the US's energy...

Visit their website and tell me you don't feel slimy just looking at it: nomi.ai

They are not "using their own data" in any sense -- their image model knows ghibli well. Their language model knows flickr. They are either using pretrained models that use web data, APIs, or their own web data.

I am seldom at a loss for words, but the juxtaposition of Mike Lee mocking the murders and attempted murders of the Hortmans and the Hoffmans, then asking for prayers for Kristi Noem is breathtaking and defies description in any language.

@bestese34.bsky.social Terry Moran was fired for calling Stephen Miller “bile” but…

Sen. Mike Lee can make a joke about killing a MN speaker and remain in office.

Mike Johnson can call for the “tar and feathering” of the California Governor and remain Speaker.

Do I have this right?

Gotta hit that reshare button because I've heard even not-online people making overblown water use claims 🫩
i'm reposting this because there's a lot of people who keep screaming about data server water usage when the actual water crisis is already here and it's because americans cannot be bothered to grow anything but livestock feed and strawberries in the desert with flood irrigation.

and hamburgers.
A cheeseburger uses a lot more water than a ChatGPT request 🍔

Actual farms, not the data center variety, are sucking up groundwater more quickly than surface water, explains @markgongloff.bsky.social 🎥

New newsletter about maybe the most interesting thing in college sports: BYU suddenly convincing a ton of elite basketball prospects (including THE BEST PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY) to play for them.
And most of them aren't even Mormon!

BYU basketball has activated the Mormon money cannon
By bringing in a slew of 5-star prospects with no connection to Utah or the LDS church, BYU basketball has shown how quickly a school can change its standing in the modern era of college sports.

Techlash is such an obvious & understandable response broadly. It has also rotted people's minds on the inside out on a lot of topics.

I'm more cynical every year, but seeing so many people reverse on positions or take up ridiculous & thoughtless ones is a sig. contributor.
