I have a genuine question and I’m hoping to ask without causing backlash. I often see the view that readers shouldn’t expect anything from authors when it comes to writing or releasing the next book in a series, that authors don’t “owe” readers anything. I’m interested in better understanding the reasoning behind this.

From my own point of view, when I start a book or series, I assume the story will eventually reach an ending, ideally within a reasonable timeframe. Without that, it can feel like an incomplete product, and I think it’s natural for readers to hope and maybe expect a conclusion. There are a couple of authors I have in mind who haven’t finished their series, likely for very valid reasons, but I still frustrated at the lack of closure.

I’m genuinely curious to hear other perspectives and learn how others think about this, so please be kind.
