But what alarms me in all this is how the girls who were victimized by these men are largely forgotten. I want us to find ways of centering them in the discourse.

I'm hearing the same thing. Dems are nearing a surrender. I'm shocked. Largest protest in history + best election night in years + polling showing we're kicking their ass in public opinion. And now Dems may cave.

It ain't over til it's over, so please do call if you've got a Dem senator.
Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.

Thanks to the shutdown, we didn't get the first estimate of Q3 GDP today. And private-sector data offer no good substitute for official GDP.

The shutdown offers lots of lessons about what private sector data can and can't do.

What the government shutdown teaches us about private sector data
The government shutdown provides an unexpected test case for an increasingly urgent question: What would happen if official economic statistics became less useful, whether through declining resources,...

I need the Mets to keep this going because, this year, baseball has been the exact right distraction from *gestures at everything* and I don’t know what I’m going to do when their season is over.

In a new interview with David Remnick, Ezra Klein discusses the essay he published after Charlie Kirk’s assassination that condemned political violence, and why, in the piece, he praised Kirk for “practicing politics the right way.” nyer.cm/oU91Wnb

It's a mistake to displace one's hopes for a happier future onto a sports team, let alone a notoriously unreliable one. Nevertheless, that is what I've done. Better to think about the race for Mayor, maybe.

While he rides he plays chess on his phone (also reads Reddit) yet, oddly, was not aware of the MTA app.

Acts of political violence aren’t acceptable. Non-political school shootings aren’t acceptable. Sacking the legislature isn’t acceptable. Military occupation of peaceful American cities isn’t acceptable. Abductions conducted in courthouse hallways by masked agents of the state aren’t acceptable.

Note to NYC people: CVS appointments for COVID vaccines are very available and hassle-free. They even accommodated me showing up to the wrong 6th Ave location (because I was multi-tasking when I made the appointment.)

Just a reminder to check for your name in this list of books that OpenAI trained from. If your name is there, they probably owe you several thousand dollars.

OpenAI cried that if everyone eligible author files, the company will go bankrupt, so I'm alerting every author I have ever spoken to.
