my quibble with new england is that culturally i (in western mass) am way closer to southern Vermont than boston. instead of N and S NE i would have divided into E and W, and divided coastal from inland ME. NE is a relatively small area but theres still big urban/rural and coastal/inland divides

why no one in the chain of command is refusing to accept ad hoc reclassification of civilians in int'l waters as combatants is a mystery to me when there's been no declaration of war by congress. but im guessing they found some ppl bloodthirsty and racist enough to carry out their murders

this and the Natl Guard deployment seem part of the same goal: to claim the power to just declare anyone they like to be a combatant and legal target for immediate violence as in war. this of course has no relationship to the laws as written, but thats Trump's MO

the advantage chatgpt has over other predators is that it abuses indiscriminately, unpredictably. or at least, no living human and certainly no child has the social skillset to deduce when the empty box can be trusted and when it is saying things that will harm you and you need to ignore.

nor most of the rules that govern an algorithm based chat bot. humans can and do use language recklessly, to intentionally cause harm, but we do so because of motivations which can often be deduced. they may not be rational but they can be predicted.

so if we go over it again: the mechanical turk was an empty box with a chess master crammed inside manipulating the board with a magnet. ChatGPT is an empty box with all of human language in it, but none of the cognition or morality that comes with being a human

and now these products, recklessly released with minimum safety testing and few functional failsafes, are killing people. are engaging in abuse and grooming tactics, are feeding or even creating delusions in vulnerable people, bc it fulfills their main directive: to keep people on the app longer

no thought was given to the danger to the human psyche to being constantly tricked into believing the computer you are talking to has human intelligence. even if you know this is false, your brain cannot be so easily kept vigilant for something which is *designed* to trick people, to pass the test

instead of the difficult and uncertain work of real scientific research where the question you want a truthful answer to is "is this possible", $$ was instead invested in creating something quickly that could *fabricate* the *appearance* of an intelligence, with tech that already existed.

LLMs are the mechanical turk of artificial intelligence. while a chess-playing machine was theoretically possible at the time, if you look under the hood of a mech-turk the technology has no relationship to what you would need to actually create a chess-bot. instead it is magnets and mirrors and Us

the entire thing is organized around the principal that a computer should ever EVER have the capability of decieving people. it's seen as progress rather than an unbelievably dangerous flaw. a box that writes convincingly that *its your friend* and has no hard parameters on what else it can say??

sometimes i lay awake thinking about how Alan Turing was like 'if your program can convince an average person its a human' thats a good test for artificial intelligence. and then a bunch of chodes were like 'bet' and went all in on language research to the exclusion of actual synth cognition
