Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

When I was first deciding what to do at uni I wanted to do either philosophy or English with creative writing but I got persuaded out of it by my dad. Sometimes I wonder how I'd have been different if I had decided to do a BA rather than a BSc

Listen to Coffee Monster's recommendation!

We will be in Manchester on Friday and Sheffield on Saturday, if you want some top notch entertainment and a reasonably priced T shirt.

Education for education’s sake — learning about something because you want to learn about it — is not only an unalloyed good thing, it’s a fundamental part of what makes humans human. Arguing against it is inhuman. And Tim’s very correct about not telling adults what to do with their time and money.

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

I'm giving away this signed 1st edition h/b of my new novel (it has a tiny jacket rip which means I wouldn't sell it) to one person who reposts this.

You might like it if you like:
Folkloric creatures
Old records
Intricate psychedelic stories
The idea of circular time

All shares much-appreciated.

I remember working in IT for the civil service and having to go in on strike days - as contractors, if we didn't go in we didn't get paid. I felt so guilty! So glad I don't have to do that anymore!

all discourse aside, there is one machine with consciousness. it's printers. they are alive and conscious and they hate you and they'd take your arm clean off if you let them. never trust a printer.

Yeah exactly. Lucky if you get any support at all depending on where you live. But the DWP are expecting us to have proper care and assuming we're fine if we don't!
Wish you well too ❤️

There is a real, potential problem here because ME and LC are so poorly understood (and variable in severity). There are no clear tests proving the condition which leaves patients vulnerable when speaking to agencies. I have LC but am retired. If I was younger I would not be able to work.
littlegreyboat.bsky.social
I have ME and I don't have a care plan. The only medical support I was given were three one-hour sessions with a support group that consisted of eight people sat in an uncomfortable, loud, overly hot side room in a hospital being patronised by a nurse for an hour. 'Have you tried mindfulness?' etc
littlegreyboat.bsky.social
Yeah. I completely agree with the fact that the DWP have a total disconnect from the real-world experiences of most people with ME. They're claiming that people are fine because they don't have a care plan but it's because they don't have access to a doctor to give them a care plan.
littlegreyboat.bsky.social
The DWP were supposed to share their training guidance on ME/CFS with the ME Association but they've redacted nearly the entire document so it's neither use nor ornament. Sounds like the DWP as a whole to be honest.

It’s round two! @spraypopmusic.com take on all-comers (in a nice way!) in Manchester, Sheffield, and Todmorden this weekend. They’re joined by Boston's @thisblissmusic.bsky.social, and local lad @hawaiiworms.bsky.social rounds off the bill on all three dates. Come one, come all.

Some excellent evidence here on why forcing people with ME/CFS or Long Covid into work is a bad idea. Think there's little or no chance of the government listening through.
