Here are the Subway/Metro Station design guidelines that were compiled by UMTA/USDOT in the 1970s in an attempt to prevent WMATA-style cost overruns again.

It got shelved when everyone at UMTA got laid off and we forgot it. But it's prescient about cost drivers -- rosap.ntl.bts.gov/view/dot/11352

Model station designs for both cut and cover and mined! It favors mined-twin tubed stations (a la Crossrail) because of reduced excavation size. The US/MTA habit of mining boxes underground is likely the most expensive way to build a subway station.

This is what we hope to do in El Cerrito - build a new library at Plaza BART, along with 743 homes.

This is our best opportunity for a new library, as there’s not space to rebuild on current site and the lease for the BART site will be $1.

A citizens measure is circulating now to fund the library.

Cities are developing a new approach to developing housing: Integrating it into mixed-use library projects. These investments improve neighborhood vitality, add housing & improve services.

In new research @urbaninstitute.bsky.social, I create a database of such projects & point to success stories ⏬
Aging Libraries Could Offer Cities a Unique Opportunity to Build New Housing While Improving Public Services
Since 2000, more than 1,800 apartment units have been built in combined library-housing developments. These projects not only address local housing needs but…

weird how the c suite classes act like they’re all risk averse but then when it comes to actually unpopular things like mass layoffs or giving AI the time of day they’re suddenly brave mavericks who must “innovate” at any cost

SCOOP: Last year, Ubisoft cancelled an Assassin's Creed game set during Reconstruction. Was to feature a Black Assassin who, among other things, fought the rise of the Klan

Sources: Leadership nixed it over concerns re: U.S. political climate, backlash to Yasuke

When @sgoodyear.bsky.social and @brooklynspoke.bsky.social got in touch about doing an episode of Cancel Me, Daddy, I fangirled hard, and then we cooked up this really cool episode about automotive propaganda and how it works in today's politics

It's out here now on youtube and everywhere tomorrow

The Australian Catholic University uses AI to detect whether students are using AI to cheat on assignments, then requires students to prove their innocence.

The problem isn't AI, it's unethical fools who think AI is any sort of authority on anything.

University caught out using AI to wrongly accuse students of cheating with AI
An Australian university has accused thousands of its students of cheating with artificial intelligence. The problem? Many have done nothing wrong.

It happened then too. I’m still haunted by this image from Marc Hermann’s “New York: Then and Now” series of the aftermath of a three-year-old Brooklyn girl run over on her tricycle in 1959:

"Our streets are deliberately and inequitably designed. In cities like Toronto, over 80% of street space is dedicated exclusively to motor vehicles. This is not a natural state; it is the result of decades of policy choices that prioritize vehicle throughput above all else." Lanrick Bennett

I'm writing up an extensive case study of Bologna's transit priority policies, and when I write down the numbers of the 1984 referendum on a car-lite city center, I don't know if I'm more amazed by the turnout (90%?!?) or the % of yes (almost 70%)

It's just a world that no longer exists...

Urbanism is so successful, highway engineers now have to build in *secret* hidden lanes like it's the Piața Romană metro station.

Caltrans has released a cross section for the ultimate (raised viaduct) version of SR-37.

Now maybe I'm just being paranoid, but if you were building a road that you planned to keep at 4 lanes wide, I don't think it would look like this.
Cross section of 114' wide bridge structure with each direction having a 12' outside shoulder and a 10' inside shoulder.
