There are wayyyyy fewer people who want to do the act of writing vs people who want to be known as writers.
That’s part of Audra Winter’s problem, I think. She doesn’t actually like writing, but she wants to BE a writer.

If you don’t derive any benefit from the act of writing, no pleasure or catharsis or satisfaction, why are you doing it? This isn’t meant to be an aggressive question, I’m not demanding an answer, but it’s a thing you may want to ask yourself. Life is short and you could do something else?
Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

When prices rise because *demand* is hot, wages usually follow. When prices rise because tariffs raise costs -- a *supply* shock -- there’s no reason paychecks catch up. That’s why tariff inflation hurts a whole heckuva lot more. It's a permanent reduction in living standards.

Looks like I need to box up some food for my large adult son. He and his girlfriend are both disabled (he's working as much as possible).
Still no SNAP.
At least he has relatives that can step in for him. What about the people who don't?

The fact that people using SNAP cannot buy food that is "hot at the point of sale" is some ableist, classicist, bullshit. I just found this out (thanks @erinbiba.bsky.social), and as a disabled person I am livid.

I censor myself on here a lot— not because I am afraid of the repercussions but because if I actually let all my rage run wild it would burn down everything in near proximity.
It’s the needless suffering and the total lack of empathy from our leaders that just really makes me want to breathe fire.

Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

Ask him why so many air traffic controllers are retiring at once. Ask him if it has anything to do with Reagan firing 11K union strikers in 1981 and having to replace them all at once. Ask him how the mass firings this year will impact us the same way 40 years from now. Ask him, Jake.

i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?
