very cool that if you are working on behalf of right-wing culture warriors, you no longer need standing to have your claim adjudicated by the supreme court

It's not just that they're going to strike down a law against conversion therapy, it's that they're going to do it on behalf of made-up claims from a straw plaintiff who can't honestly show the law affected her at all
tomscocca.bsky.social
One thing about American's widespread distrust and disapproval of the Supreme Court is that mainstream news coverage mostly doesn't dwell on stuff like standing, so people don't even begin to grasp how rigged the Court truly is www.nytimes.com/live/2025/10...

Marco Rubio is the only member of this administration who is not constantly lying to the public. He is instead, constantly lying to himself, and sometimes does this out loud in public.

He knows. And some part of him is tracking his massive body count. He’s a mass murderer and he KNOWS it.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio insisted “no one has died” as a result of U.S. foreign aid cuts. In Myanmar, the grieving father of a 2-year-old boy who died after their food rations were cut calls such claims a lie.
Starving children screaming for food as US aid cuts unleash devastation and death across Myanmar
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has repeatedly said “no one has died" because of his government’s decision to gut its foreign aid program.

the most delightful version of logging on to see what news you've missed
Dr Ramsdell, whose phone had been on airplane mode when the Nobel committee tried to call him, told the BBC's Newshour Programme that his first response when his wife said, "You've won the Nobel prize" was: "I did not."

To which Ms O'Neill replied that she had 200 text messages that suggested he had.

The recent ICE raid which emptied an entire apartment building was apparently at the request of Wells Fargo, which is trying to foreclose on the building.

The building is in a 27 million dollar foreclosure filed by Wells Fargo. The next day, Wells Fargo filed an emergency motion for receivership. The fascist regime kindly emptied the building for donor Wells Fargo.

Let me be clear: backpay for these workers is required under a federal law I wrote with former Senator Cardin — which Trump signed — during the last Trump shutdown.

This is just more fear mongering from a president who wants a blank check for lawlessness. It won't work.

There’s a lot in here that deserves a pull quote, but this is the most egregious. I need people to recognize the gravity of the situation here in Chicago;

"The ones that are getting out are coming home to no home," Watson said.
According to her, after the raid occurred, building management stole or threw out residents belongings, including visas and important documents.

ICIRR is still trying to determine the identities of all the people detained in the raid. Castro said that the organization usually can do that by following up with family members or loved ones. "In this instance, there was nobody left to work with," she said. The only detainee name they're sure of is that of a person who passed their Venezuelan passport to a neighbor as they were being taken away.

I mean, if economic power tops everything, we might as well toss in the towel, the billionaires have won. I think that solidarity matters, and I think that politics matter. Organizing locally is important, but so is what is happening on the national stage. We need to raise our voices there, too.

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

It's been suggested that it will be a lot like the Troubles in Ireland, and that's perfectly terrifying...especially since this country is larger and has more guns. I don't see any prep work being done for some states to band together agasint the Federal government, so that probably won't happen.

I don't think I disagree with you, but my question was what happens on a larger scale. Individual action, small collectives, organized protests, these are all good. But if we end up in a civil war, I'm wondering what the sides will be, and how it will be prosecuted.

And...then what? The thing is, you need to have some sort of organization to take over the governmental functions.

Um, does he think that fraudsters are inhuman? That "thinking like a fraudster" is some weird, unique ability? Some of the most kind and ethical people I know can "think like a fraudster." Bruce Schneier, frex. I don't know John Rogers, but he seems nice, and he def. "thinks like a fraudster."

Dr Oz: "We have an advantage with AI. You know why? We don't think the way fraudsters think. That's just not what our minds do. The bank managers don't think about bank fraud. They want to do loans and help businesses. Fraudsters think about fraud. So the AI can think the way a fraudster thinks."

There is no shame in avoiding serving in an unjust war. The shame is his war-mongering. The worst thing about chicken hawks is that they want to have _other_ people do the dying.

The media landscape is so different, now. It's not like an incident can "make the nightly news" and then be the topic of conversation, nation-wide. That model _also_ had its pitfalls. It's one of the reasons Carter was not re-elected.
