“the only way to make American schooling as equal as possible is to make it as public as possible: Pool the taxes, the funding, the administration, the risks―and keep schools, teachers, and students far away from capture by private interests or discipline by private financial markets.”

Hell yes.
The biggest obstacle to winning a progressive agenda for public school finance is the reactionary politics that lets parents opt out of their schools, their districts, and their taxes.

Here’s my review of @schooldaves.bsky.social’s great new book!

I have my students write three-sentence summaries of articles and then read them aloud in class, to see how different summaries are depending on the things that most interest you. We map overlaps and differences to help them understand why trusting a supposed summary machine short-circuits thinking.
being conversant in the scholarly discussions within a discipline or a field is different from reading random summaries

In the wake of public-records requests from a right-wing group, the University of North Carolina system is considering creating a publicly searchable database with information from all class syllabi. Many faculty fear the information will be used to target them. www.chronicle.com/article/when...
When Everyone Can See Your Syllabus
More states are requiring public colleges to make class syllabi available to the masses. Proponents say these measures boost higher ed’s credibility, while faculty fear being targeted.

This is, of course, a stark betrayal of the New School’s storied history and animating spirit. It demonstrates something many of us know intellectually but have trouble grasping: many university leaders *do not care* about, even *actively despise*, the basic values that bring us to work every day.
The New School is now a place where students cannot major in History, Anthropology, Sociology, Global Policy & International Affairs, Global Studies, Urban Studies, or Environmental Studies. And more pauses, closures, and mergers coming down the pike this week. The future is uncertain.

A thing you're not seeing if you haven't checked Twitter in the last week is all the political betting markets (Polymarket, Kalshi) are actively caping for Cuomo and spreading Zohran conspiracies on there. Usually this would be a cause for some sort of regulatory oversight but that no longer exists.
