A “peace board” where nations must pay $1B for a seat isn’t diplomacy — it’s extortion dressed up as foreign policy. Turning global stability into a pay‑to‑play scheme is reckless, corrupt, and dangerous.

On the one hand, this reinforces the treatment of university board members as essentially political appointees.
On the other hand, that is the role they have played. They have ignored faculty and students, especially in UVA, where they conspired with the DOJ to remove the university president.
In addition to pushing out board members at UVA, Virginia's new governor has fired the lead attorneys at VMI and George Mason. Things are happening quickly as political control fully flips to Democrats.
U-Va. board leaders resign as Spanberger and Democrats take power
The dismissals are another sign that Virginia Democrats plan to quickly unwind changes made at public colleges during Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration.

imo one way to understand how we got here - and an angle i think future historians and political scientists will focus on a lot - is that the GOP basically collapsed as a functioning party during W’s second term and O’s first term. @joshtpm.bsky.social has (rightly) been banging this drum for years
I would like to think the Mad King proclaiming “I will continue to illegally raise taxes on the American people until the NATO alliance collapses” would be the type of statement to cause Congress to act, but I’m not sure there’s any red line the GOP Congress has anymore.
Trump says he'll impose a 10% tariff (rising to 25% in June) on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland, because they've sent people to Greenland, until the US can buy Greenland.

As a reminder: this is a Congressional power.
Trump is exercising that power under the claim of a national emergency even as he is creating a national emergency.
Quick estimate: Trump just launched a (renewed) trade war against countries that collectively account for around 11% of U.S. imports of goods. If they retaliate, 22% of U.S. goods exports are at risk (that's 15% for the 8 countries affected, plus 7% for the rest of the EU).

All for Greenland.
