To do list for this moment:

1. Establish a discipline of calling your Congressional reps every day.
2. Join an ongoing organizing effort in your local community.
3. Take on at least one personal habit that expands your capacity for attention, compassion, and commitment.

A group of hundreds of faith in coalition who started at a Maywood church just arrived at the detention center for a eucharistic procession.

They want to offer communion to detainees inside, but won't be able to get past the barricades and fence on Beach Street.

What is described here is the destruction of the US’s capacity to combat emerging diseases abroad before they reach our shores, to respond to epidemics here, and to ID bioterrorism.

Congressional Republicans are content to think that nobody will blame them if catastrophe strikes. Disgusting.

Per CDC source: At internal leadership meeting this afternoon, it was shared that 1,257 people were RIF'd at CDC. Number may not be final. Apparently, chief of staff was unaware that RIFs were going to occur so not clear who is making decisions. (Short 🧵)

I love this because it recognizes that trans people’s organizing & struggle is a story with relevance for all people.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

The MMWR allowed public health workers in New York to start piecing things together — the beginnings of recognizing a major epidemic (and then a pandemic). It is unspeakably important.

Of course this administration is at war with the notion that there is a public, or a society.

With news that they are trying to fire the staff of the MMWR, I thought I would note that AIDS first came to the attention of public health workers broadly from an MMWR report describing an unusual cluster of pneumonia in gay men in San Francisco.

yes, the billionaire conspiracy continues to be the most underrated part of all this. Trump does not win, and certainly does not get away with all this, without the sudden turn in all the formerly liberal/moderate/apolitical billionaires buying up the media, buying votes, going all-in for trump

Somewhere between Brooklyn and Berlin.

(Berlin’s bike lane structure is extremely logical and, while it occasionally involves going from grade-separated sidewalk lanes to street lanes, it’s very clearly signed.)
shaygabriel.bsky.social
Spent all day ebiking around Paris. I understand the scale of the transition here, it is generally pleasant to bike, but also much of the system is illogical — feels like an “awkward teenager.” Unclear lane changes and diversions, many common routes switching from one way to bidirectional & back…

“One of the chants that has become ubiquitous at these protests at Broadview is, ‘Love your neighbor, love your God, save your soul and quit your job,’” said Black, who pastors at the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago. “Everybody chants that.”

Pope Leo XIV has blasted how wealthy people live in a “bubble of comfort and luxury” while the poor suffer. In his first teaching document Thursday, Leo confirms that he is in perfect lockstep with Pope Francis on matters of social injustice.

Just started getting our child allowance from the German government, which is substantially more generous than the US child tax credit (and with monthly disbursement, and up front rather than a tax credit)… despite the lower cost of living and lower salaries here.

it is very minor in the grand scheme of things but the 2024 election result also really amplified the menace beneath eric adams's hilarity. much harder to laugh at the guy now.

My statement on the two year anniversary of October 7, 2023.
“Two years ago today, Hamas carried out a horrific war crime, killing more than 1,100 Israelis and kidnapping 250 more. I mourn these lives and pray for the safe return of every hostage still held and for every family whose lives were torn apart by these atrocities.

In the aftermath of that day, Prime Minister Netanyahu and the Israeli government launched a genocidal war: adeath toll that now far exceeds 67,000; with the Israeli military bombing homes, hospitals, and schools into rubble. Every day in Gaza has become a place where grief itself has run out of language. I mourn these lives and pray for the families that have been shattered. Our government has been complicit through it all.

This must end. The occupation and apartheid must end. Peace must be pursued through diplomacy, not war crimes, and our government must act to end these atrocities and hold those responsible to account.

These last two years have demonstrated the very worst of humanity. We must answer it by modeling the very best: a relentless pursuit of our higher ideals and an unwavering commitment to universal human rights.”

There is no question of whether we as a society can afford to have every child cared for by someone. We can, because we already do. The question is whether we want to keep the burden of paying for it primarily on parents, where it currently is, or whether we want to spread it more broadly.

I recently reported on an ICE officer who was publicly reprimanded and “relieved of his duties” after shoving a woman to the ground in an NYC immigration court. Well, he’s back.

DHS did not respond to a request for comment.

I’m pretty skeptical that governments who cannot muster the economic and political power to build out wind, solar, and grid improvements will somehow be able to do this for a wave of new nuclear technology.
