My triumphant return to blogging at @heartlandsignal.bsky.social is about (what else) how the bad map passed in Ohio was a good deal for Democrats heartlandsignal.com/2025/10/31/a...
ANALYSIS: Ohio Democrats show when a bad map is a good deal
Aaron Kleinman writes, "Ohio Democrats just gave up a congressional district to Republicans. Good on them."

Update on the Blaze story defaming the Capitol officer as the J6 pipe bomber from CBS.

What's scary here is that ODNI sounds like crazy town...they drafted a memo with confidential info based on Steve Baker's nutso hallucinations that even Tulsi Gabbard is embarrassed by? And did similar re: Kirk /

Animal Triste by Monika Maron is good but also very German, you gotta be ready for Dieter from Sprockets level Germanness
The Story of Zahra by Hanan al-Shaykh, very second wave, not too long, comes together nicely (if cruelly)
The Implacable Order of Things by Jose Luis Peixoto tries to add devils and giants and blind prostitutes to Portuguese peasant life to make it interesting and it does not succeed in any way.

Wrong but while we're at it I stopped having meat with nitrates in it and let me tell you, I don't miss cold cut sandwiches at all. Overrated.
Apple pie is bad. This is not really debatable. So is key lime pie, while we’re on the topic. Pecan pie is the 🐐 tho.

I support Trans rights as much as anyone but it's an electoral loser. It helps Republicans who are ok with shooting trans.

I get why A History of Western Philosophy by Bertrand Russell blew people's minds when it was released, and I wish I'd read it in college, but it gets increasingly dated as it approaches modernity.
Far From The Tree by Andrew Solomon is a much, much, much longer version of this. Even if you don't have a special needs kid still very interesting but he could've edited it down a bit.
Adding Second Life by Amanda Hess to the short list of books I tell new parents to read. It perfectly captures what it's like to have a kid when everything around you is being optimized to keep you afraid and sell you crap.

Fine I'll stop blocking every Canadian who tells me we're on the verge of another civil war
Definitely an overlooked point: The authoritarian far right, including its white nationalist iterations, are self-consciously global in scope and liberals need to adapt to that:
The movement to destroy liberal democracy is international, and so must be its defense

The fact that Polis didn't immediately rule this out is incredibly alarming.

If he actually caves to Trump's demand, he could be impeached.
NEW: Colorado's election clerks are increasingly upset that Gov Jared Polis (D) hasn't ruled out releasing Tina Peters to the Trump administration.

On a call today, a bipartisan group of elected clerks said Polis hasn't agreed to meet with them about their concerns.

This afternoon (??), 0-11 UMass can either win as a 14-point home underdog against a 3-8 team ... or complete its case to be considered one of the very worst FBS-level teams ever

There's also coach stuff in here but obv I'm far more interested in whether UMass is worse than 1951 New Mexico State
CFB coaching carousel resuming soon, plus UMass’ incredibly bad 2025

No bailouts. The US should extort these companies when the crash happens so they get minimal compensation in return for nationalizing the entire panopticon industry and then destroying it once harvested for socially useful parts. It won’t happen but it should
when its definitely not a hostage situation

blocking people insane about Will remains one of the most consistent ways to make this website a more pleasant user experience; he draws the maddest fuckers.
i have agreed with stancil and i have disagreed with stancil. he has sharp elbows. but the accusation that he is a raging transphobe is not connected to reality. and the weaponization of "i'm listening to trans people" to smear someone because you disagree about fucking econ polling is disgusting
No, I do not “pick on” trans people, I have never done anything like this. And frankly, I think the willingness of some people to completely invent accusations of transphobia in the desperate search for a cudgel against ideological opponents suggests they don’t really care about transphobia

In leaked audio recordings, Peter Thiel reveals he told JD Vance to ignore Pope Leo XIV on moral issues, including the development of ethical AI. He also suggested the American pope was a tool of the Antichrist.

I don‘t think the public will become less transphobic but i do think culture war shit against such a small group is essentially a luxury good and with a bad economy they’ll stop giving a shit.
I think Democrats should double down on trans rights now. It's obvious that most voters don't care about it so you might as well stick with your principles and goad Republicans into focusing on it at the expense of everything else so they're the ones who look like freaks.
