New from Searchlight today, some hopefully helpful polling on ICE. Voters reeaaaally hate ICE detaining Americans and entering homes without warrants.

If we want to electrify everything, we need to get real about how to power the northeastern US grid in winter — because operators *will* do anything, even burn diesel fuel, to avoid blackouts. I wrote about the challenge of keeping the midwinter lights on for the NYT: www.nytimes.com/2026/01/28/o...

"I'm a Grok guy" -JD Vance
The ADL found that Grok was the most anti-semitic chatbot in its testing -- and did its best to minimize that finding, because everyone is afraid of Elon. @miasato.bsky.social runs it down www.theverge.com/news/868925/...

I think it’s additionally about granting perks to the goon squad; see also Olympics
They know the average undocumented immigrant doesn’t have $12k+ to get into the Super Bowl. This has never been about immigration. It’s about dominating the population and instilling fear

When I think about measles I think about the number 1,000. Thats the number that epidemiologists use to explain harm from measles in children. With 1,000 cases, about 200 children will require hospitalization, 50 will develop pneumonia, and one to three will die.

South Carolina is at 789.

Anyway, their latest viral dispatch is via James O’Keefe who went “undercover” in Minnesota, posing as a guy with a girlfriend, and uncovered people saying “thank you, neighbor,” somebody smoking weed, and residents who didn’t want James O’Keefe in their neighborhood.

Very little if anything seems to have changed on the ground. ICE is still out there terrorizing neighborhoods and trying to disappear neighbors. None of us on the ground are buying this bullshit. We will keep organizing and fighting.
The intense fallout from the killing of Alex Pretti has forced President Trump to publicly change course in Minneapolis.

Listen to our White House reporters discuss the changes on today's episode of "The Daily."

The White House has been met with broad outcry over the killing of Alex Pretti, as well as pushback from Congress.

One thing I see liberal outlets giving ground on that I feel the need to correct: it’s impossible to “dox” a paid public official
By simply reporting their name, institutional role, and political affiliations

There's a larger thinkpiece to be written on how Trump and the right simply can't comprehend soft power
Democrats just won a special election in St. Paul by 91%. That's basically impossible and also a 20% improvement over Harris's showing in the seat. Also, it shows that deploying ICE as a voter suppression tactic probably only works against their own voters.

He's got the best political instincts of anyone in the Senate right now
Gallego’s whole thing of moderating on policy, radicalizing on tactics/partisanship, and attacking when events allow is pretty clearly trying to find a way through the “popularism/populism/future of Dems” stuff.
