I seriously think the Social Internet is 21st century cigarettes. Complete with secondary smoke causing a lot of harm in nonusers.

Every American Citizen right now has privileges of free speech that those with Visas or Greencards currently do not. It is your *duty* to speak up loudly and contest what's happening. The Constitution is getting violated daily, which isn't surprising, but highly dangerous.

Wield your privilege.

And just like that, overnight, there’s a US-Russia axis. If you made a movie out of this people would say it’s an absurd premise

Yes, of course I voted for Smaug the Terrible for President of Dale.

I like how he speaks his mind, he's a different kind of politician. Plus he's just like us townsfolk, in that he also hates the elves. What could go wrong?

Yes, this is the endgame we all worry about. The screaming about the dangers of authoritarian govt followed
By Americans answering "but that's what we want". There's no good comeback for that except to say "you'll be sorry."
I unfortunately many years ago reached the point where I realized that what most Americans long for is a benevolent dictator. AKA "Authoritarianism, as long as it's my guy".

Voters will proudly admit this today, saying out loud that it's fine because they don't intend on losing again. 😐

Starting to actually think that the United States might be cursed.

Is there any chance whatsoever that we accidentally built it on top of an Indian burial ground??

lmao no, TikTok users are not moving to Bluesky. They would literally rather learn Mandarin than learn how to read a feed of text posts. This is a millennial retirement home.

There is still some in there, I know it.

My deepest take, a rather new one, is that the specialization of modern society both creates and requires ignorance of... a lot.

It is impossible to know all the things, which means there's value in individuals knowing a lot about some things, and those individuals exploit knowledge gaps.

People always say “fiction isn’t reality”, but I think it is important to remember non-fiction isn’t reality either.

Everything, history *especially*, is written with a bias. Question it. Find multiple sources. Do your research.

Lay abstracts are hard. It's surprisingly difficult to thread the needle between: "Streptomyces are Gram-positive actinobacteria that biosynthesise a spectrum of bioactive metabolites," and "There is a tiny magic creature that lives in the soil and will make the bad-bad go away."

Last week I posted about how much it annoys me that people *insist* Frodo and Sam MUST be gay because they're so close

Today I want to talk about this more & how it relates to our society's general devaluation of friendship

Based on the movies; I haven't read LoTR in 20 years
