but we are in the fifth year of our covid era — i’ve heard people say “pandemicene” — and many activists in this area remain steady, in no small part thanks to lessons from our queer elders, both those who survived to teach us directly and those who didn’t, whose memories we now keep alive too.
44 years ago today.
The epicenter of the AIDS crisis lasted for 15 long hard years.
We're not yet the first year of the current cataclysm. Be as steady as you can. www.nytimes.com/1981/07/03/u...

1. The prevailing discourse surrounding mitigating against SARS-CoV-2 infection is rife with false dichotomies. At a societal level, the most obvious of these is the notion that mitigation measures stand in opposition to economic growth, when, in fact, the opposite is true:

If anyone can help with any amount, we'd be grateful!

Let’s talk a little bit about what you can do to avoid this wave. It’s looking like a huge one, and even ignoring the risk of death or permanent disability from long covid, do you really want to lose two or three sunny weeks to feeling like crap?

Here’s some common sense risk reduction ideas:

Life is random and we are fragile and the sooner nondisabled people make peace with that, the better.

Of course, now we’re five years deep in a pandemic that nondisabled people refuse to try to mitigate because they can’t handle the idea, so I don’t have a ton of hope.

I have spoken to rooms full of nondisabled people and heard this ripple of tense laughter. I have told my own story of flipping a car on black ice and people straight up told me they would just drive more carefully.

They can’t handle the idea that you can’t wellness and responsibility your way out.
Sen. Tammy Duckworth just said on Colbert, "We should all live long enough to develop a disability," & the audience laughed uncomfortably.

I can tell you what they were thinking. It was "Not me. That would never happen to me."

& the underlying, unacknowlged premise was "b/c I'm better than that."

it would be so awesome if yall didn’t only wear masks at explicitly political actions and instead saw your choice to wear a mask in, at the very least, public indoor spaces at the political action it is: one in direct opposition to the eugenic policies we’re being forced to live under.
