Woo, riding around the edge of an eddy and sampling for omics and sensors- new use case. I was recovered at the blue dot - started at a red dot to the right, drifter track in the center. Eddies can bring nutrients towards the surface and stimulate productivity. Also useful for robot joyrides.

Our fieldwork doesn't only happen at sea!
C-CoMP researchers working with @maratimes.bsky.social collected Providence River water to test extraction methods for samples collected on C-CoMP cruises. In terms of filtering speed, 5 L of Sargasso sw = 50 mL of Providence River water!
C-CoMP Bridge-to-PhD Fellow Emily Hu stands in front of the Providence River while holding brown collection bottles containing river water. Photo by Arianna Krinos. A filter that was used to filter water from the Providence River is tinged with yellow, indicating a plethora of biomass in the water. A peristaltic pump is shown on the lab bench behind a gloved hand holding the filter. Photo by Arianna Krinos.

🔬Emily Hu (@yunqianhu.bsky.social‬) is a C-CoMP B2P Fellow working with @maratimes.bsky.social & @akrinos.bsky.social at Brown. She uses microbial sequence data and computational tools to uncover how biotic🦠& abiotic drivers shape microbial community assembly in the North Atlantic Ocean 🌊.
Photo of Emily Hu on the R/V Atlantic Explorer during the 2025 C-CoMP March Cruise. Emily is standing outside with the bow of the ship and the ocean behind her. Photo provided by Emily Hu. Emily collects seawater from the CTD rosette into a bottle on the deck of the R/V Atlantic Explorer during the 2025 C-CoMP March Cruise. Photo by Arianna Krinos. Emily uses sterile forceps to load filters onto filter holders in one of the labs on the R/V Atlantic Explorer. Emily is using the filters to capture particles, including microbes, from the seawater. The DNA from the microbial cells will be extracted, sequenced, and analyzed to understand the microbial community composition of the seawater. Photo by Arianna Krinos.

IBES affiliate @maratimes.bsky.social, an assistant professor of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences, lost her first federally funded grant from NASA earlier this year.

“One of my big concerns is that the trust in science and in scientists is broken,” she told @virginiagewin.bsky.social.

... “One of my big concerns is that the trust in science and in scientists is broken,” says Freilich. It weighs on her that scientists might not be able to follow through on the promises they made to community partners, such as sharing the air-quality findings in a timely manner."

This research emerged from a community science program. We analyzed hydrogen sulfide data, including an air monitor that we installed above the Salton Sea. We found that H2S is under reported. H2S impacts health and quality of life.

NOAA Climate and Global Change fellows were furloughed this week. One of many losses.

Big up to @rdzombak.bsky.social for bringing eyes to this story. 🧪

So many people beyond my little cohort of fellows are impacted by slowdowns at NOAA. America is rapidly losing footing as a leader in climate science and we all are paying the cost.

I can confidently say that I would not still be doing physical oceanography without MPOWIR. The termination of MPOWIR's NSF grant is soul-crushing to me. Let's celebrate the success of this 20 year program and get to work continuing its legacy. 🌊 ⛴️ 🧪

Individual-level racism would be DOGE saying: "Oh, here's a Black PI. Let's terminate that one."

There isn't enough evidence to claim that. Instead, it appears to be structural.

Women and Black investigators disproportionately study topics like STEM education that were cut at higher rates.

See:
Three-fourths of NSF funding cuts hit education
More research eliminated and mass firings

And it's not just the PIs. Our terminated grant had deep investments in under resourced communities.

It matters who does science and how it is done.

Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

Received some awful news about a major project (sites.ps.uci.edu/climatejusti... ) I have led for the past 2+ years. So many people have worked incredibly hard to realize our vision and this immediately cuts the funding for 15+ students and staff, as well as for our community partners
