Our peer review system for scientific publishing
-we pay to publish our MSs
-pay to read other’s MSs
-and donate our time to review MSs
is bad enough without passive aggressive review reminders, touting the “quality” journal’s rapid turnaround time and asking why you are setting back science.

Research by my former PhD student, Daniel Gschwentner, on how grassland wildfires impact lakes is now live in Ecosystems: doi.org/10.1007/s100...
Wildfires are contributing to P loading in lakes, but lakes are N-limited so that P is likely not being processed by algae.

I went on my first bull trout redd survey of the year today. Saw some absolutely incredible fish! One of the biggest specimens I've ever seen, and it was close enough to touch (I was invisibly filming from the other side of a root wad). 🐟

It's true: Academic publishing has become a racket.

But I think the idea that #peerreview can happen haphazardly in the comments of a preprint server is naive.

Coyote whiskers grow gradually over several months, so we cut each whisker into small segments. Each segment gave us a isotopic “snapshot” of diet from a different point in time, letting us measure how consistent (or variable) an individual’s diet was ✂️🐾

The discourse around LLMs for writing is really interesting - in part, I think, because much of it makes a very large assumption about *how* writers will use LLMs. I think unpacking that is useful (including two different variants of the assumption), so I tried:
The big assumption behind loud opposition to “AI” writing tools – and its two flavours
I continue to be fascinated by the discourse around so-called “AI” writing tools: it’s an amazing window on the ways smart people confront a big change that’s emotionally charged. Especially on soc…

I wonder why this type of potential disaster doesn't quite get the attention that AI superintelligence is receiving. Definitely makes me feel uneasy to meddle with chirality...

Following the same argument, I guess we could see coal companies stating that they are helping to fight climate change because they feed the fuel that provides the electricity that powers the AI that, in the end, solves climate change.

Without artificial-intelligence technologies, balancing human-caused greenhouse-gas emissions with carbon removals by 2050 is out of reach. Action in five areas is needed to keep this goal alive.
