I'm sorry to be so difficult, but I'm afraid the truth is that I am.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

I think I agree, more or less. It's very hard to sustain the belief that some kind of plurality of people at these demos are doing so in complete innocence of the implication. Maybe - maybe! - on some random Saturday, sure, but not today.

I do take Palestine demos today as expressions of support for the October 7th atrocities, and I do assume the people attending are either clueless or active supporters. I do consider 'Globalise the intifada' to be inciteful, and certainly as outrageous as 'Gllobalise the nakbah' would be.

I just saw someone use the abbreviation “AI;DR” and I’ll be laughing for a while.

OK, *now* we're going to have a problem (I thought you were ona dealine!)

It's a bit "man v bear" really. Yes, I could be attacked & die in Israel. But people there would not ask what I was wearing, or if I think the bear had its reasons, or why I hate all bears & want them to go extinct, or chant that we should globalise bear attacks.

I was in Israel last week visiting family, and in the midst of the unreality that is Yom Kippur nothing was as mind-bending as the fact that I felt safer there - in an active war zone! I was mere miles away from the Syrian border FFS! - than I would have done here.

"There is nowhere in the United Kingdom where large gatherings of Jewish people can now take place without some form of security. [...] There is essentially nowhere else in Europe where something like this is not also true."
Israel seems more important — and less desirable — than ever for British Jews
Amid rising antisemitism at home, our lifeboat abroad seems less attractive

Mm-hmm. Swinging Vienna didn't turn out all that well, so... (as I keep saying, I'm not the descendant of optimistic people)
marstrina.bsky.social
I guess the thing about lifeboats is that they're not meant to be attractive. You'd only get into one, however well-run, if you had literally no other alternative (except to die), right?

I genuinely do admire Layla Moran's conduct throughout this entire hellish two years. She has empathy & integrity most of the people passionate about the conflict (myself included, sometimes) patently lack.
bestforbritain.org
Today we remember the victims of the 7/10 atrocities, deadly ripples of which continue to engulf far too many innocents. As @laylamoran.bsky.social said last year, we must hold ALL the people suffering in our hearts. If Layla can do it, with loved ones in peril, can we ask any less of ourselves? ~AA

Agreed, but the main female characters are self-defined slackers, even if they're in a different register than cruder comedy.

I wouldn't characterise the fandom as leftwing as much as woke-avant-le-mot. In particular, certain kinds of sexual/gender politics that became mainstream only in the 2010s were already the dominant idiom for us in 1997. They got bundled in with "leftwing" only later.

Israelis pay respects to victims of October 7 music festival attack, two years on

On the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attack, Israelis visit a memorial at the site where Hamas gunmen killed more than 370 people and seized dozens of hostages at the Nova music festival

Yes, I understand that is what is meant by accountability, I just don't agree that it's ever been a 'load bearing feature of masculinity'. My question was about how you see male accountability manifest in the world. Just one timely example is that Golda resigned after 1973, Bibi would never.
marstrina.bsky.social
That's interesting, how do you cash that out? My pinned tweet on the other place for years was about how the essence of patriarchy is that women take the moral blame for men's actions, & I think that's still true.

Petition: Inquiry into sexual violence in NHS hospitals
I want the Government to have an inquiry into sexual violence being reported in NHS hospitals, to come up with a plan to reduce incidents. Only 17,000 signatures so far, 100,000 needed,. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/73...

'Romy and Michele's High School Reunion' is a good stab at it. Also, in a different way, 'Reality Bites'. But it was a pretty short-lived 90s thing, the trope died fairly quickly I think.
