How can a government be taken seriously when it does nothing about Grok (in fact posts alongside it) while promoting this

From a UK and wider European point of view: I might not love the failure to condemn a flagrant breach of international law (even though I shed no tears for Maduro), but I get the logic. The indefensible bit is our failure to make our defence spending and coordination match the reality of the new US.

Gibraltar’s senior police officer was “in effect… forced out” of his job in 2020 as a result of assertions by the territory’s acting governor and chief minister that they had lost confidence in him, an inquiry by a retired British High Court judge has found. rozenberg.substack.com/p/gibraltar-...

One of my strongest beliefs is that just giving poor people more money is a massively underrated anti-poverty policy.
I work with people in poverty/debt. Yes, some have problems managing money: poor education, poor role modelling, poor mental health, poor coping skills, these can all play a part. But the real culprits are the triple whammy of high CoL, inadequate housing & low rates of benefits (esp LHA). 1/2

Lovely piece about one of the nicest eateries in London, which after nearly 80 years of serving hearty Polish food is going to be destroyed not by Nazi bombs or Soviet expansionism, but by TfL's redevelopment plans. Go while you still can. (yes, paywall.)
Just one year left to visit one of London’s most treasured restaurants
Daquise has served Polish cuisine since 1947, but now faces closure from a TfL scheme

Oh my God has she really said this? Genuinely very worrying. I just can't understand the crater where the Conservative Party used to be. Bad for conservatism, bad for the country, bad for women and girls, bad for everyone.
Dog-whistle and factually incorrect. Ladies, raise your hand if you were sexually assaulted by a boy at school? I’d wager this or a family member is most women’s first experience of sexual violence

The thing here is absolutely you could make a sensible critique of the government’s proposed policy on practicality or effectiveness grounds, but instead pivoting directly to “you know, it’s all the fault of the foreigners” is certainly a choice

Yes, I know this will be superficially popular, but a) it won't just be applicable to 'migrants' (my best friend's son is a US-UK national and was born here) and b) it's another nail in the coffin of any idea that British citizens are equally citizens irrespective of their backgrounds.

I really dislike this rhetoric. The Lords are doing their job, ie scrutinising a very controversial bill. If we're going to make this law, it must be done to the highest standards of scrutiny and oversight.
The House of Lords must not be allowed to block the clear and settled will of elected Members of Parliament

Those peers who’ve tabled countless wrecking amendments to the Assisted Dying Bill are bringing Parliament into disrepute and undermining the very fabric of our democracy

They must give way
Peers’ delay of assisted dying bill ‘could lead to constitutional crisis’
Opponents are playing with fire with 1,100 amendments, critics say, as filibuster tactics to defeat Kim Leadbeater’s law ‘threaten the upper chamber’s future’

I’ve been very brave. Ventured into Fortnum and Mason. Their fruit cake had too short a shelf life to be any use. The pepper had better be good. Trail of bodies behind me as I made my escape. Cooling down now.

People talk about the right side of history - everyone living is currently on the right side of history (it is behind them, where it should be). One day, everyone living will be on the wrong side of history (they will be dead and part of it). Thank you for coming to my brutally materialist TED talk.

The professor referred to ‘pregnant women’ whereas her script changed it to ‘pregnant people’. The BBC needs to explain why a group of internal staff are allowed to twist the narrative. We can all see what they are trying to normalise.

I’ve been thinking about this, and I increasingly reckon we shouldn’t dismiss the role of sheer childish ‘you sacked me, so screw you’ pique.

I do think Katie Lam is a good example of how the word ‘racist’ sometimes just needs to be used. We know what she means by ‘mostly but not entirely culturally coherent’. She’s given no reason to believe she’s differentiating on the basis of attachment to liberal democratic norms. She is just racist.

I am for ID but the way it’s being announced is a dog’s dinner. Should be benefit for all first, coincidentally stopping illegal workers. And everyone should have a card with the app as an extra. Think first, open gobs when well-planned. Govt too often do it vice versa. Baaad.

All over facebook the complaints from the anti-immigrant posters are that people are 'undocumented' - it doesn't seem like a consistent position but does highlight the importance of a good comms strategy when it come to policy that you would expect to be relatively popular.
The sheer hypocrisy of this.

You have to "show your papers" to vote in a general election.

I have to "show my papers" to examine a PhD thesis.

I can't sing evensong down the road without "showing my papers".

The Mail backed all these Tory changes. But suddenly Labour is turning us into Stasiland
