It's bizarre, because I remember 2017 and 2018 when there was this really concerted effort to moderate crazies off of social media, and it was really effective! And then after 2020 it's like everyone just simultaneously gave up on the idea and it became the consensus that moderation was pointless.
The greatest trick the fascists ever pulled was convincing everyone that moderation was useless
Of course there will always be Bad Posters, but whole online communities also develop a character. 4chan and Twitter are Nazi hellholes; Tumblr could be insane; some subreddits are pleasant and productive, etc.
Typically this reflects the commitment of mods to keeping trolling/harassment at bay.
