This is also how to think of everyone posting here, on Al Gore’s internet
This is going to keep getting used until the American people find some maturity.

researchers, librarians, laywers, anyone with familiarity with the LOC: What do you think is most at risk if the current administration gained more control over the Library of Congress?

Every person on Bluesky should know:
* Every post on Bluesky is PUBLIC forever
* Every post on Bluesky is archived by ICE, NSA, and many other agencies
* Even if you delete a post, it’s already been captured
* Judges don’t care if you were “kidding” or being ironic

an unfornate truth! At least Guinness gave us the t-test
Eugenics was the excuse to invent many fundamental statistical techniques in the late 19th century that we still use.

So about ten years ago I found a small network of bots on Reddit dedicated to spreading hate. The thing about it is that these weren't even responding to political topics - they were just responding to random keywords with insults and hate.

The same bots are now here. You should understand why. 🧵
this is kind of a niche issue but: if you are getting weird and hostile responses that feel a little off, there are some folks on here making accounts that automatically reply to large quantities of posts in a vaguely hostile manner. you can ignore them, and also, it's not personal

More thoughts on Bluesky & business models. We need social networks with business models akin to Craigslist, where money is intentionally left on the table.

Do you think they could live with that?

Every public action on Bluesky is available via a stream of events known as the firehose. By monitoring the firehose for repeated text, it is sometimes possible to quickly detect groups of spam accounts as they spawn.

I'm going to try to post more about papers I read. This morning I read "Stoking the Flames: Understanding Escalation in an Online Harassment Community" dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/....

In the paper, @kejsitake.bsky.social and co-authors look at the harassment community Kiwi Farms.
Stoking the Flames: Understanding Escalation in an Online Harassment Community | Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction
Online harassment remains a prevalent problem for internet users. Its impact is made orders of magnitude worse when multiple harassers coordinate to conduct networked attacks. This paper presents an analysis of 231 threads in Kiwi Farms, a notorious ...

If more people understood how dysfunctional the building code update process is there would be a revolution. It stopped being mostly about safety a long time ago. It's now more about turf (trades) and monopoly (supplier) protection, but untangling the self-interest from real safety concern is hard.

& it's only hard by design! I could rant about the industrial gatekeeping for pages/hours. Teams of people with less than ten years of cumulative building exp could be raising code-compliant buildings by the hour!
There is far more money to be made in housing than rocket launches. The reason there is no Elon Musk of housing is that it is several orders of magnitude harder than rockets.

Starter packs are really a great counterpunch to algorithmic following recommendations. Turns out actual people are better than a snippet of code at suggesting who you might like to follow, and they actually enjoy doing it.

Trivia/context: A handful of other sources corroborate other folks giving/getting these tats- allegedly bc they were afraid of forgetting it. SSNs started in 1936 (this picture is '39) and wasn't for individual IDing until people realized it was a national Unique Identifier in the computing era.

ok, my hottest hot journalism take is that journalism which relies on paywalls for funding and restricts access to those who cannot afford it or otherwise just cannot be bothered to jump through the hoops to read that content is not accessible journalism, and access matters a ton right now.
