The framing I've come to is that ERISA has created a framework that financially penalizes non-wealthy people unless they trade the agency inherent to the capital they own for a maginally higher level of future consumption.

And not just via increased tax, but also via benefit cliffs, etc.

Biggest subsidy is the 30 year mortgage. It’s a loan no bank ever would write in large volumes. Much less with terms like fixed rates, fully amortizing, with little to no recourse. Undoing that is probably approaching “undo social security” levels of toxicity.
