And the strong reporting hasn’t come only from legacy outlets such as the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune but also from newer independent media such as Block Club Chicago, the TRiiBE, Borderless, Unraveled, and South Side Weekly.

There is nothing like being there and seeing things with your own eyes, which is why local journalism is so important.

Does the debt become dischargeable in bankruptcy? Can further third parties purchase and forgive the distressed debt? Why would you give up the insane political capital of economic stimulus through loan forgiveness?

Operationally, wouldn't this be a nightmare? How do you do the treasury analysis and management on it? How do you manage the IBR process? How do you build the infrastructure for all of that?

Obviously only a small component of the larger situation, but surely this is illegal? Those loans were made with certain guarantees to the holders, including forgiveness at prescribed statutory periods and under certain conditions. Regardless of whether the statute contemplates assignment...
