Hello! I'm Matt.
I've spent 16 years doing research on climate mitigation & policy. Various bits in #IPCC etc.
Also 15 years doing comedy.
Now I split my time:
- Lecturing at UCL in environmental economics;
- Climate comedy including live shows, hosting, books, radio/TV #Scicomm #Climatecomedy

FACTCHECK: Claire Coutinho claims UK gas power only costs £55/MWh…

…but she is ignoring a few small details:

🤫 Gas prices always rise in winter
🤫 Gas plants cost money to build
🤫 CO2 causes economic damages

New post just out:

"The financial crisis theory of everything"

Why the 2008 crash was the WW1 of our generation that led to nearly all of the problems we have today - from the rise of the radical right to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The financial crisis theory of everything
Last month there was a fascinating poll from More in Common asking people to pick the main reason Britain is “on the wrong track”.

Pace now is everything. Fossil fuel states and corporations, aided by populist demagogues, are pulling out all the stops to defend their profits. At the same time, climate impacts are worsening rapidly.

We have the tools to save ourselves. We need to use them, fast and furiously.

Wind and solar combined were at 1% in 2005. They will hit 20% by 2026

The renewables revolution is unfolding live, fast and furiously: It's exponential, global, and this decade. Just look at the data and do the math

Completely agree on the need to look at profits across points in the whole supply change.

I've focused on pensions & finance sector's long-term risk in the show & so couldn't really cover short-term as well (although slightly touch on Basel III) as there are too many narratives. Maybe next show!

I'm currently standing on stage every day for a month at #edfringe and pretty much saying this. We have to actively end the bad stuff.

What I don't quite have the time to discuss in detail is that while long-term oil & gas are likely now unprofitable but short-term the volatility keep them going

We have to be purposeful about ending the use of fossil fuels because they’re not going to end themselves anytime soon. While wind and solar are cheaper, they are not as profitable. Therein lies the problem.

My new @edfringe.bsky.social show Matt Winning: Solastalgia is on sale now. Everyday (except 12th) at 16:35 Assembly George Square Studio 5.

It's about ending fossil fuels told through the lens of fatherhood & the history of making money from energy. #edfringe #MyAssembly
Poster for Matt Winning's show Solastalgia at Edinburgh Fringe 2025. Matt is in formal attire & sat against green and white with a back-scratcher in his hand with a tiny and on the end of it against his left pinky. Another human hand is holding Matt's left shoulder.

I think there’s a big difference between “all hope is lost” and “I have lost hope” and in climate it is really important to distinguish between the two. My personal feelings, your personal feelings are not the limits of our collective politics.

By day, Matt Winning works on climate policy. By night, he’s turning scientific data into jokes. Fusing razor-sharp research with dry Scottish wit, Matt uses stand-up to make the climate crisis feel less distant, more human, and a lot harder to ignore.

This comparsion in the NYTimes today is pretty stark. China is racing ahead to be a high-tech exporter of 21st century technologies, while the US is doubling down on being a petro-state exporting the technologies of the 19th century: www.nytimes.com/inte...
