"I doubt NATO would be there for us if we really needed them".

A reminder that the one and only time NATO invoked its self-defense clause was after 9/11, and our NATO partners have suffered over 3,400 deaths (not casualties, deaths) in Afghanistan.
sorry that trump and nato are in a middle school friend group breakup : (

This will be another terrible lesson of the difference between ‘can’ and ‘should’.
Before President Trump announced on Saturday that the U.S. had captured President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela, the U.S. military had launched one of the largest deployments of its forces to the Caribbean region in decades. About 15,000 troops were in the region by December, the military said.

The United States military’s Southern Command said in December that about 15,000 troops were in the Caribbean region.

"New Balance of Power" by @deadder.bsky.social is brilliant. The architecture of global alliances is shifting before our eyes. With Zelenskyy meeting Trump in Florida today, we may soon see signals of further geopolitical realignments in Europe and even here in Canada. #StrangeTimes #SenseMaking

Danes lost the most per capita in America's war in Afghanistan. Canada lost the second most per capita (if we discount the tiny Baltics).

Allies bled for the US after 9/11, and this is the thanks they get.
Again, it is utterly shameful & demonstrates the total failure of all of our political institutions that threatening our closest NATO allies with territorial conquest has not immediately ended this presidency.
Denmark lost more troops per capita in the post 9/11 war on Afghanistan. Saying they “are not a good ally” because they won’t surrender their territories to the US is lunacy. We are betraying our allies to satisfy the whims of a would-be Emperor for whom the US is not enough.

The separation of church & state exists to protect both religion & democracy by keeping either from controlling the other, lessons learned the hard way after centuries of abuse & persecution, when faith & power were mixed. However, America is now determined to discard the lessons of its history.

This is what those who have fallen into the trap of generative AI simply can’t grasp. Photography isn’t about making a clever image it is rooted in the subject - the thing itself - and in the absence of that all AI images are by definition shallow, transient and meaningless.

In 1984 went to en exhibition at the portrait gallery in Edinburgh exhibiting the works Yousuf Karsh.
It was a revelation, an awakening in appreciation of the art form. The pose, the light, shadow, background capturing the soul of the individual at the click of a shutter.
