Back when I was writing regularly about baseball, circa 2012, I crunched the numbers & the likelihood of becoming a tenure-track professor in one of the MLA disciplines was almost precisely the same as getting from a college baseball team to a MLB roster.

Nothing has gotten easier since then.
Becoming a tenured professor is a bit like becoming an NBA forward or a successful recording artist. (Or a novelist or a working fine artist or a pediatric cardiologist.) The supply is massively greater than the demand, and everyone is excellent. This is a hedge fund of yourself, not a career goal.

Montclair State University has with no reasonable justification replaced all departments in the humanities and social sciences with four non-disciplinary units, seemingly randomly chosen by uni executive leadership with no regard for faculty input or governance. Terrible & portentous

This book is officially out today. I feel pretty confident that everyone in my feed (academic and not) could use it — I certainly got a lot from reading it in process, and, also, hearing Sarah say these things to me live and in person over a period of many years. press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/bo...

Reader, it does indeed go away.
6ish+ years of full time teaching and I still get so nervous before class the first few weeks. Does this ever go away?

These AAUP “Tips for Engaging with Social Media” don’t seem to have a realistic sense of how & why people use social media. I mean I’m sorry but I’m not going to post “the faculty united will never be divided” over & over

BA/MA/PhD in French, African Studies, Gender Studies, etc. cut. Are our professional associations speaking out about this?
The attack on public higher ed is mostly about class: Indiana Gov Braun went to Harvard; he has a net worth of 100m. He does not think working class people deserve to engage ideas, to read, understand science, to have a few years to explore what might be a different future
