“A total ban on (automated speed enforcement) would reverse years of progress on safety ... It would place more pressure on police, increase enforcement costs, and most critically, endanger lives,” said a letter from 20+ Ontario mayors to Ford and Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria.
20-plus mayors urge Doug Ford to compromise on speed camera ban
“A total ban on (automated speed enforcement) would reverse years of progress on safety,” said a letter signed by 22 mayors and sent to Ford and his Transportation minister on Thursday.

We're focused on trying to solve the parking problem but we should be focused on how to build convenient, affordable, and plentiful alternatives to people needing to drive everywhere. Fund more transit, cycling, and pedestrian infrastructure.
Text: “Two parking spaces should have been the standard. Most residents cannot rely on public transit to get to work, school, or the grocery store.

“Moving forward, we need to take a more realistic look at how people live today. Future planning goals shouldn’t come at the expense of current taxpayers.”

Cipriani said the solution is the city giving more consideration for parking based on density.

How to design safer intersections:

1. Near-sided signals. Placed before the bike/ped crossing, they prevent drivers from creeping into the path.

2. Pavement differentiation. High-contrast, colored crossings (like this red asphalt) clearly establish priority and command driver attention.

Story: www.therecord.com/news/waterlo...

This is actually *the* most logical place in the entire city for high-rises, tbh. I would hazard a guess that the immediate 200m surrounding Allen Station has the highest density of any ION LRT station.
It’s ‘anybody’s guess’ when twin condo towers might be built, Waterloo developer says
City council has been asked to approve condo towers at 37 and 33 storeys just blocks from three towers that were approved but not built

Here's a good example of how the consensus around urban density in KW differs from many other medium-sized cities. At a development proposal meeting, a Waterloo councillor responded to the "high-rises aren't for families" trope with a comment that they are in no way a lesser-than form of living.
This drew a rebuke from Coun. Royce Bodaly. “There are many, many residents who live in the city of Waterloo who are raising families in high-density apartment buildings, and I don’t think that we should be suggesting that is some sort of lesser-than way of living,” he said.

Or, hear me out, the provinces need to step up and do their fucking jobs and fund their own services properly. They are not helpless. They can raise their own revenues.

Canadians could be facing a “perfect storm” in mental health challenges due to insufficient supports and a trend of growing economic stressors—which will need to be addressed through greater federal funding.

Here's another for "the media is not covering the Ford gov't's scandals"

Ontario voters continue to eat up this gravy train of shit with a shrug.

For years, my colleagues and I warned everyone within ear shot in study after study that the situation with DCs was untenable and unsustainable.

Now the city has killed the golden goose despite the warnings. I take no pleasure as a Torontonian in saying this but we're in the FO stage of FAFO.
damienmoule.bsky.social
Imo you should ignore the drop in DC contributions. One because of the $2.9B buffer which I think will last us through to a resumption of building and two because DCs (should) fund growth related projects so if the growth isn't manifesting then delaying is fine.

Matt Elliott: How the popping of the condo bubble led to a looming budget crisis in Toronto
Toronto’s condo boom finally going bust isn’t just a concern for developers and investors. The collapse is also causing major financial woes for the city.

A problematic aspect of this government is that with their constant bad meddling, they've delegitimized *good* unilateral policy making for cities. BC is a perfect example of how to do this right, and there are absolutely areas where the province should overrule cities when they refuse to cooperate.

The frustrating thing about the premier's visceral reaction here is that he could have reacted with this much zeal anytime on the housing file, by forcing reforms on intransigent municipalities. Standardized upzoning & bans on parking minimums for all the cities are all things the province can do.

Shared e-bikes solve the safe parking and storage problem that plagues urban cycling.

I don’t have to worry about my bike getting stolen if I leave it parked on the street overnight because it’s not actually my bike, it’s one of thousands owned by the Bay Wheels system.

Electric bicycles, and shared electric bicycles in particular, are a revolutionary transportation technology. Forward-looking cities should be building out the infrastructure necessary to make cycling safe and convenient for everyone who wants to do it.

i recently got a great deal on a barely used folding ebike and i have to say it has revolutionized my train travel. i can get from my front door to the amtrak station in a little less than 5 minutes!!!

Trump: "We call them the water drugs. The drugs that come in through water. They're not coming. There are no boats anymore. Frankly, there are no fishing boats. There are no boats out there period, if you want to know the truth. Does anybody go fishing anymore?"

We already knew that lawbreakers don't like the law, but now we know that the lawbreakers who don't like the law are in government. This explains a lot.

Case in point: QC Premier Legault‘s ongoing, utterly delusional calls for “certainty” in the Canada-US trade relationship.
Certainty is impossible. An agreement can’t deliver it. The problem’s not just Trump, but that the US elected an authoritarian party that no longer respects the rule of law.

There's an almost desperate desire in certain Canadian business, media and government quarters, to pretend that this is all just an unfortunate economic spat, a new treaty will normalize relations, and Canada itself isn't on the menu. Playing up the personal relationship is part of that.

Trump doesn't like or respect anyone. That's kind of his thing.
The reason Trump disliked Trudeau (and, more tellingly, Freeland) is that they stood up to Trump and defended Canadian interests. Not because they weren't canny Trump-whisperers.

Media are talking about the “positive relationship” between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Trump. And that Trump likes & respects Carney much more than he did Trudeau. But seriously, what value does that translate to as Trump continues to increase his aggressive economic attacks on Canada?

This would be funny if not incredibly dangerous behaviour. It’s incumbent upon this government to be transparent about this government employee, the consequences for repeatedly breaking the law. If it were anyone else the premier would be using them as an example in one of his PR stunts
