My father died suddenly in our home this past Sunday. I am fighting against the overwhelming revulsion I have to asking for financial support to ask for help covering my access to healthcare for the remainder of the year so that I can focus on supporting my mom.

Hi #LGBTQWriteAThon!

My WIP is set in and around Colorado Springs, across three time periods: an apocalyptic 1993, a dystopian present, and the Late Cretaceous (75 million years ago). 🦖

Unseasonably hot amble on the Appalachian Trail today.
1. Big oak tree.
2. Ghost pipe gone to seed.
3. Fields.
4. Autumn color.
Photograph looking up the trunk of a massive oak tree toward a colorful autumn canopy. Partway up the trunk, a white trail marker blaze has been painted on the bark. Up-close photograph of ghost pipe, a parasitic, non-photosynthesizing plant growing low to the forest floor. The pale pink stalks terminate in pink knobs, where the summertime flowers have closed. Photograph looking across a mown grass field toward a line of trees, with rolling hills beyond under blue sky. Photograph looking up at a colorful forest canopy, popping with yellow and red autumn leaves.

It’s New Story Day! “The Little Deaths of Autumn,” my very seasonally appropriate short story about fungi, is out now in the new issue of Kaleidotrope.

Watching the Bakshi / Frazetta animation, Fire & Ice (1983). In a time of monsters and magic, a princess, a warrior, and a barbarian run around in string bikinis and build a polycule.

No forward progress on my novel, but today I went back and replaced existing chapter numbers with new chapter titles. It already feels a lot more cohesive and booklike to me.

PAPERBACK GIVEAWAY!

I have an extra copy of my latest to give away. The illustrations came out really nice if I do say so myself!

Because of all the weird tariff and shipping stuff, I'll have to limit this to US only but drop a comment if you're interested and I'll pick a winner Oct. 15th

It's here!

Roadkill is out in the world. I can't in good conscience recommend it to all readers. A sad and angry book. 90% of the animal characters are dead at the outset & the humans don't fare much better. But if you're in the mood for an unconventional eco-horror experience, links in comments!
Book cover for Roadkill by Helen Whistberry showing a bird, raccoon, and snake skeleton sprawled across a dark asphalt highway with yellow dotted line. The title is in large yellow letters that have blood streaming down them and out onto the road and animals. There is a dark and stormy sky in the background. Black and white illustration of the head and neck of a howling wolf in profile. Its mouth is wide open and a dark liquid is trickling from its mouth, snout, and eye.

In the woods today with @craftyrowan.bsky.social.
1. Pond.
2. Wetland.
3. Maple.
4. Hemlocks.
Landscape photograph of a pond catching autumn sunlight. The foreground is a shadowy wooded shoreline. The far shore is forested, with pops of fall color under blue sky. Photograph of a sunny wetland area. Water and grassy open space fill the foreground. Autumnal trees form the middle ground under blue sky. Photograph looking up the bole of a large, scraggly old maple tree touched with autumn orange. Photograph of a hemlock forest catching sunlight in its branches. Bars of shadow stripe the forest floor.

Welcome to Avalonia!
There is a universe just beside our own, a waystation for people and animals who stumble out of their own timeline. Some are trapped there, others choose to stay, but each and every one of them has a part to play in its future. From cowgirls riding dinosaurs to medieval espionage plots, D.B. Cooper to Amelia Earhart, these interconnected stories weave the tapestry of Avalonia. So what are you waiting for? Adventure awaits just beyond that portal . . .

We're still trying to raise $246 this year to cover expenses, if you're feeling generous.

We'll never charge a submission fee, and we pay our writers.

Your help will also ensure that we can bring on a guest editor in the new year, to avoid that whole 'monolithic voice' business 💛🖤

Thank you. 🐝

Happy non-binary day and week!

We're a small mag publishing non-binary, genderqueer, and two-spirit writers.

If you'd like to help us out, we're currently working towards our goal for paying writers for this and next year.

Shares are very much appreciated, too!

Hi #LGBTQWriteAThon! I’d hoped to have my first poetry collection available by this point, but since it’s not, I’ll boost my most recently published story: “Steel Holds the Heat’s Memory” in the Summer 2025 issue of Kaleidotrope. kaleidotrope.net/summer-2025/...

Sometimes to an excessive degree. I’ll have to remove most of the shrugs, sighs, and gesticulations to improve the flow of dialogue, leaving just enough to illustrate character and add flavor. #QueerPrompts
