It’s New Story Day! “The Little Deaths of Autumn,” my very seasonally appropriate short story about fungi, is out now in the new issue of Kaleidotrope.

Special shout out to Thomas Brandreth who attempted to enter The Cycloped into the competition (pictured below) despite the "no horses" rule.

Back from my family trip to tell you that I have a new story in @kaleidotrope.bsky.social ! "What a Big Heart You Have" is my tender tribute to Grandma and Aunt Ellen, though the characters aren't literally them. kaleidotrope.net/autumn-2025/...

Oh hey, it's #WorldOctopusDay? 😉 🐙

This is what I call my nearly-hard desi SF meets cephalopod-love short story. It got an honorable mention in Gardner Dozois's last Year's Best anthology.

CW for somewhat spicy and norty scenes; bigotry and prejudice.

the most delightful version of logging on to see what news you've missed
Dr Ramsdell, whose phone had been on airplane mode when the Nobel committee tried to call him, told the BBC's Newshour Programme that his first response when his wife said, "You've won the Nobel prize" was: "I did not."

To which Ms O'Neill replied that she had 200 text messages that suggested he had.

ICYMI, we're open to submissions by authors of historically marginalized backgrounds for this entire month!

We want to read more works by Black writers, Indigenous writers, disabled writers, gay and lesbian and trans writers, and other folks whose voices must be heard!

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Awful. It's been altered in so many ways beyond "colourisation". The kid has an entirely different face! AI is being used in so many ways to undermine history, information, even reality.

Miyazaki: in this movie two young girls (one is a toddler) are uprooted from everything they know to start new lives near the rural hospital their mother is in; she is possibly dying of TB. Their dad works several hours away and they are largely unsupervised.

AI Bros: so homey! So comfy!

years ago heard an interview w/ a biologist who worked on interspecies comm and identified the ways birds and monkeys share info, including the way they announced the presence of a jaguar. one day in the jungle he heard the jaguar call, wondered who was getting hunted, and realized "oh, it's me."

I've grown to expect it at this point. If I've got two stories coming out in roughly the same time period, they WILL be the same week. It's just a law of the universe.

If I had a nickel for every time I had two stories published the same week, I would have more nickels than you would expect.

Oct. 7, 1925: Lord Willingdon, the former British governor of Bombay, warns a council of the Church of England that ideas of "color superiority" are damaging to the West. "The white races must realize the necessity of treating all colored men in a spirit of absolute equality."

Holmes, Saward and in more modern years Moffat all write the character of the Doctor as a canvas of common behaviour, motifs and characteristics, which works well because they write a damn good generic Doctor but for specific incarnations, I usually find era specific writers to often be the hearts.

Every so often I remember just how good The Five Doctors is and reflect that it's a tragedy that Terrence Dicks didn't get to write for the Fifth Doctor more. He really nails character and writes him as a more charming, less irritable version of the Third Doctor and Davison seems to enjoy that.
