This is interesting.

The EU’s #CBAM has become a key point of contention in #UNFCCC talks (see bsky.app/profile/mjfe...).

Brazil is now essentially proposing a bad bank to offload this discussion, so that it won’t hamper #COP30.

Novel use of ye olde yet-another-forum.

To be consistent w/ limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees, governments collectively need to produce less than half of the fossil fuels they are planning for 2030 (5 years from now) and then double down to halve production again by 2050, @unep.org, @sei.org, @climateanalytics.org & @iisd.org show 👇

🌍 Carbon storage is not a limitless climate solution.

A new IIASA-led study in @nature.com shows that safe, practical underground carbon storage could reduce warming by only 0.7°C – almost 10 times less than earlier estimates of 6°C.

🎯 As the EU shapes its 2040 climate target, international credits return to the spotlight.
@felixschenuit.bsky.social‬ warns: credit quality, permanence and scalability must be ensured – especially for carbon removal.

International Credits in EU Climate Policy: Old Conflicts, New Challenges
In the discussions being held at EU level about the 2040 mitigation target, the role of international credits has recently taken centre stage....

The legislative proposal for the 2040 target has landed:

▶️ 90% reduction of net GHG compared to 1990 (no separate target for removals!)
▶️ flexibilities as central element, incl. international credits & domestic CDR
▶️NDC will include an *indicative* 2035 figure

"This chapter examines the NFF and its potential to guide transformative policy solutions rooted in diverse and locally held values of nature."
Fig. 3. Summary of 31 studies published in academic journals that engaged with the NFF, reviewed by Okayasu et al. (2025), showing the proportions of: a) methods (72 total counts), b) scenario types (49 total counts), c) policy cycle stages (62 total counts), and d) outputs generated in the application of the NFF (87 total counts). As studies can fall into multiple categories, the total count exceeds the number of studies.

At the #SB62 #Juneclimatemeetings, “unilateral trade measures” – code for the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism ( #CBAM ) – have become a major point of contention.

#SB62 just adopted the agenda after two days of deliberation. Disagreement over the inclusion of items on #climatefinance and trade measures.

Pushback following the EU’s lacklustre communication around #CBAM has seeped into #UNFCCC negotiations.
