very excited to do 2002/2003 except somehow stupider and potentially more destructive
SCOOP—Trump plans to issue an executive order designating fentanyl as a "Weapon of Mass Destruction," per copy of EO reviewed by me. Source at State speculates purpose is to designate cartels as terrorist orgs/justify military ops in Mexico/Canada.

While everyone is talking about the Texas midwife arrested on felony abortion charges: I don’t believe it’s a coincidence that Texas AG Ken Paxton announced these arrests at the same time Republicans are advancing Texas’ biggest anti-abortion bill since the end of Roe.

chicago police in one south-side district can now file felony gun possession charges without approval from a prosecutor, under a pilot quietly launched on jan. 1.

lawyers + advocates fear removing a layer of accountability from a department w/ a long history of misconduct.

Trump was just asked about the alien enemies act only being invoked during times of war. He said this is a time of war. His government is defying the court and deporting people without due process. He's not hiding it, the crisis is fully here.

“I will one day mourn Gaza, but not yet. Right now I can only be angry, and I hope you are all too.”

Written two months ago, prescient words by @ayoub.bsky.social that once again need to be read as Israel continues its genocide of Gaza.

(Don’t miss @oulakadhum.bsky.social’s poetry the end)
I wrote this two months: why I cannot mourn Gaza.

Because we all knew Israel was note done with the genocide.

Last week: tariffs don't cause inflation - other countries pay the tariff, not American consumers

This week: ok, so we lied about that, but the inflation is ultimately a good thing!

Next week: listen, we need these austerity measures to defeat the depression and build back to prior levels of GDP
But if the price of goods is rising to facilitate the reinvigoration of American production and a transition to an economy that prioritizes domestic goods and markets, that’s a tradeoff we should consider.

Anti-vaccination rhetoric is also a policy failure.

Healthcare is so expensive people turn to alternative healthcare settings and groups which lead them to conspiracy theories and the alt-right.

Inhumane, harmful, and solves absolutely nothing. This is an attempt to disappear problems without addressing any underlying issue.
The Fremont, CA city council has passed a homeless ban that outlaws camping on public property and also prohibits "aiding or abetting" homeless encampments.

This could lead to people being arrested just for handing out food or water.

This just reinforces the good v bad immigrant narratives that led us here. Of course this is what a DHS official would say. Deportations skyrocketed under Bush/Obama when ICE intentionally targeted people through the criminal legal system. Our outrage over deportations requires a critique of the PIC
Notable: Former top DHS official Deborah Fleischaker tells me on the pod that current ICE officials fear Trump's demand for higher arrests will redirect operations away from serious criminals to make Trump happy.

She explains this well. See this exchange:

It's not just Trump's executive orders themselves but also how bureaucrats are interpreting them and how the media is reporting on them and how everyone else is anticipating what will come next.

Which is what you typically see in personalist regimes.
This is only the beginning.
