Kids loved playing with toys in #Roman times too!

Some 1,800 years ago, a child in Cologne was buried with a terracotta horse with a rider on for wheels. It was definitely a beloved toy that the kid was also meant to play with in the afterlife.

Stanley Spencer painted about a dozen landscapes in and around Leonard Stanley in Gloucestershire during the early 1940s. The village, not far from Stroud, contains the remains of a Benedictine priory which lies at the foot of the Cotswold escarpment.

3/3 Looking from the nave into the chancel at Tickencote, and the juxtaposition of the 12th Century arches in this remarkable intimate space. Since I took these photos the church has come into the care of The CCT, and it's now open daily.

And here's the view at Tickencote, Rutland, from the chancel looking back west through the chancel arch. Not so elaborate on this side, but the springing for the vaulting above is also 12th Century, possibly as early as 1120.
