Kids loved playing with toys in #Roman times too!

Some 1,800 years ago, a child in Cologne was buried with a terracotta horse with a rider on for wheels. It was definitely a beloved toy that the kid was also meant to play with in the afterlife.

Stanley Spencer painted about a dozen landscapes in and around Leonard Stanley in Gloucestershire during the early 1940s. The village, not far from Stroud, contains the remains of a Benedictine priory which lies at the foot of the Cotswold escarpment.

My photo shows a slightly ovoid-shaped tool knapped from yellow-tinged rock crystal. It is mounted for display against a grey background. Described as a scraper (racloir) by the Musée d’Archéologie Nationale, it measures 6 x 3.3 x 1.5 cm. It was recovered from a Mousterian (Neanderthal) level in the Abri Des Merveilles rockshelter in France. The rock shelter was excavated by the American School of Prehistoric Research for a number of seasons from 1924 onwards, led by George Grant MacCurdy who documented that this rock crystal tool (and six others) were excavated from the lower level of the shelter together with a lithic assemblage (flint handaxes, scrapers and points) identified as Mousterian i.e. associated with Neanderthals. He suggested the original source of the rock crystal was some 90 miles north of the Merveilles rockshelter “near to and beyond the headwaters of the Vézère in the direction of Limousin and Puy-de-Dome” He suggested the rock crystal was either brought to the cave, or was carried away from its source by the river Vézère and then picked up from the riverbed by neanderthals. The info label at the Musée d’Archéologie Nationale reads: ‘Neanderthals were the first to show their interest in non-utilitarian objects: collection and transport of fossils and minerals, use of dyes such as ochre or haematite, choice of aesthetic raw materials for cut tools, such as rock crystal from Sergeac or opal jasper from Fontmaure’

WOW! This late Roman blue glass cup made an epic 12,000 km journey!

Made in the eastern Mediterranean, it was excavated from the Cheonmachong Tomb, a royal tomb of the ancient Silla Kingdom in Korea! 🤯

My photo shows a short cylindrical translucent blue glass cup which flares outwards towards the rim. The glass is darker near the rim and lighter toward the base where the display light passes through. The rim is slightly irregular and worn at the back. The glass surface is textured with vertical ridges running down the upper half, while the lower half has a texture which resembles loosely shaped hexagon and pentagon shapes, some larger than others, clustered together like cells of an irregular honeycomb. The glass cup sits on a white surface against a light grey background. The display lighting creates circular shadows and glowing blue reflections around the base of the glass. This glass cup was excavated in 1973 from the richly-furnished Cheonmachong Tomb, also known as the Tomb of the Heavenly Horse. The tomb belonged to a royal male from the ancient Silla Kingdom of the Korean peninsula. I saw this cup on display at the British Museum’s ‘Silk Roads’ exhibition in 2024, on loan from the Gyeongju National Museum in South Korea. It is an example of ancient trading of Roman goods through the Steppe Route, the original Silk Road over the Eurasian plains stretching to Far East Asia. The British Museum label reads: “This glass cup was discovered in the tomb of a royal male, alongside an ornate gold crown and other precious objects. It is of a late Roman type found across the eastern Mediterranean region. Scientific analysis indicates it was probably made in Egypt, which had a major centre of glassmaking in Alexandria. The presence of Mediterranean glass objects in tombs as far as the Korean peninsula and Japanese archipelago reflects their valued status as luxury items in the ancient world. Probably made in Egypt; excavated from Cheonmachong Tomb, Gyeongju, Korea. Early AD 500s”.

3/3 Looking from the nave into the chancel at Tickencote, and the juxtaposition of the 12th Century arches in this remarkable intimate space. Since I took these photos the church has come into the care of The CCT, and it's now open daily.

And here's the view at Tickencote, Rutland, from the chancel looking back west through the chancel arch. Not so elaborate on this side, but the springing for the vaulting above is also 12th Century, possibly as early as 1120.
