This makes me uncomfortable. Not only is this a question of ethics & respect, but perhaps these two archaeologists should ask themselves WHY a tech titan from Meta would want to locate heritage sites in resource-rich, Indigenous regions like the Amazon.

Where should archaeologists dig next? The winners of this OpenAI contest can tell them.
Archeological sites, like those in the Amazon, are disappearing faster than we can find them. Can AI help?

Just got a 🧪pitch from a PR claiming to work with Colossal (de-extinction chancers). It was a pre-written article claiming the science sector is carrying out "coordinated attacks" on the co. Spy the headline. They asked if I'd publish it on my Forbes column.

Not enough eye rolls on Earth for this 🙄

If Mamdani had checked just Asian or say, Asian and white (bear with me) NYT would never have run that story.

The only reason they ran that story is because of the cultural belief that being Black gives you leg up in society despite research that says that isn't true.

A few additional interesting points about Jordan Lasker. One, he appled to work as a graduate student in my lab years ago:

The saga of the NYT's anti-Mamdani story taken from notorious white supremacist Jordan Lasker (they call him an "academic") gets even more amazing: Lasker's only impactful paper, which claimed white people are smarter, is infamous: it misused data so badly it got his tenured co-author fired. 2/

It doesn't seem any of the researchers are from Egypt? How is it possible that we can extract 5,000-year.old DNA but we can't invite researchers from the country being studied to collaborate?

More helicopter science - no one based in Papua New Guinea is included in the author list. How much longer is ancient DNA going to operate like this?

I'm starting a new series called, "Is it helicopter science? Yep." First up, the story of an American museum using a NAGPRA loophole to given scientists indigenous remains for destructive ancient DNA research www.sapiens.org/archaeology/...
The Ethical Battle Over Ancient DNA
Ancient DNA researchers have learned to collaborate with American Indian tribes in relevant cases. But still more sensitivity is needed.

amazingly fucked up that the NYT is uncritically publishing the claim, “Race has some biological reality.”

that is, definitionally, racism. textbook.

I've written a Substack about the #ColossalBioSci #DeExtinction #DisInformation campaign; it's focused on polluting the information landscape, rather than the underlying science (except for species concepts, I talk about them)

🎉 NEW ARTICLE! 🎉

Dr. Christina Hotalen (drchristinah.bsky.social) was not best pleased with Gladiator II. In this article she takes a look at the flaws, foibles, and faux pas in the film, examining its potential as an ideologically-driven story that panders to the right.
This Roman historian was not entertained by Gladiator II — Working Classicists
From the minute we heard about this movie, I said to my friends there was no WAY I would write a think piece about Gladiator II, let alone watch it, and yet, here we are: I've both watched and think-pieced.

As a US scientist, I am an emotional wreck from our gov just making it official policy that race is a biological construct, and I came to Adam's page for inspiration but got this instead. I am awash with grief that so many are getting sucked into this BS. I'll take a breather and revisit this.

My issue is with the causal relationship betweem genes and status. Right now, hereditarianism is catching fire among the wealthy. They want any excuse to say "we should rule because we are genetically superior." Not saying you make this argument, but these people hate nuance and love flashy buzz.

The comic does a lot of reifying old classist ideas present in The Bell Curve. This panel is especially misleading: there aren't genes for being a lawyer or a baker. The environment of a family that is being inherited here, and the SNPs correlating with families is a result of pop. stratification
