Arundhati Roy's incandescent award acceptance speech about Palestine and Lebanon, in which she acknowledges so many jailed writers.

Cruel policy and a betrayal of human rights and our values.

I understand the political value, but the politics of immigration are not going to change as long as we continue to accept the right's frame. And we really need to change them before we sink much deeper into climate crisis.

Would love to see democrats counter this xenophobic hate speech by doing literally anything besides showing that they’re also willing to dehumanize migrants with increased border militarization and weakened asylum protections
"The democrats say 'please don't call [immigrants] animals; they're humans.' I said, 'no, they're not humans, they're not humans; they're animals.'"

Trump is reaching new levels of evil.

I believe our democracy depends on Kamala Harris defeated Donald Trump in November.

This speech seems completely consistent with that belief and that goal.

This weeks roundup of misplaced transphobia demonstrates the ways that—beyond harming trans people—transphobia often extends to cis people to create and enforce a regulatory system around what it’s “natural” and therefore “right” for men and women to be

I do stutter and think this line of Biden apologia is ableist. Lots of people communicate effectively while stuttering—Biden isn’t. And the notion that we should expect some incompetence from people who stutter is bad!
Now everyone--The Times and, sorry to say, MSNBC--is noting every missed syllable. The man has a stutter. I don't stutter but I am a mushmouth who speaks too fast and slurs words. I've had to overcome fear of public speaking. I have empathy for Biden. The press has empathy for no one (but Trump).

you don’t have to subject yourself to images of gruesome violence, but you should know that they exist, that you and I paid for that brutality with our taxes and our ignorance, and that nearly every one of our elected officials thinks that that violence is good and that we should fund more of it

When so much of grad schools feels like socialization in how to compromise enough for the academy to be rewarded by it, it’s a privilege to learn from student encampments what it looks like to risk security so that education/scholarship might become liberatory.

The religious right so often frames anti-LGBTQ school policies as protecting childhood innocence, but it’s their anti-trans vitriol that radicalized 3 teenagers enough to fatally wound a peer and their policies that have other queer kids afraid of the same. Nex Benedict should be happy and alive.
