Hot take. Numbers in Gaza are a minimum, thousands more beneath rubble. Staff who record deaths have been killed, IT and records destroyed, yet the minimum numbers have documented names. Most buildings are destroyed, and over 90% of the population displaced, many multiple times. The toll will rise.

The chance of this deal dying on the vine in its later phases, so the core issues that led to this hell aren’t resolved, is high.

For a war like this to never happen again, Palestinians must have a genuine horizon of hope. As long as the occupation lasts, true peace cannot have been achieved.

This is very comparable to how autocratizers have taken over media landscapes in other countries whose democracy scores have plummeted over the past 15 years (acc to all reliable indices like Polity, V-Dem, & Freedom House), including Turkey.

No, almost all of them will find rubble. 92% of residential buildings have been destroyed, 88% of commercial buildings. 62% of people have lost their property documentation, back to the Nakba
