what's really interesting here (discussed in the piece), is that computer-assisted/post-editing translation has been around for decades but it seems that the hype or convenience or narrative of new LLMs is what's really killing the industry now as opposed to Google Translate 10 years ago

Since 2023, translators and interpreters have seen work dry up, rates plummet and their jobs reduced to editing AI-generated output. Some are leaving the field, others are considering bankruptcy. All despite any major upgrade in translation quality.

This is how AI is killing translation work:
AI Killed My Job: Translators
Few industries have been hit by AI as hard as translation. Rates are plummeting. Work is drying up. Translators are considering abandoning the field, or bankruptcy. These are their stories.

While by and large I like #AlienEarth , I am somewhat dissatisfied with the xenomorphs. The teeth look too metallic and the overall design is too clean. Is that just me?

Great. And now we have to do all the typing and editing (and the print layout) ourselves. You didn’t have a hand in rolling out email clients, I hope.

Maybe it's irresponsible to leave critical systems to tech companies?

I do firmly believe that refusing to outsource your basic cognitive functions to LLMs right now - as so many are stumbling over themselves to do right now, like hogs trotting to a pile of slop that’s been set up inside of a butcher’s delivery truck - will very much pay off in a few years.

We have a “no ai (by default)” policy in our MSc programme “Philosophy of Science, Technology, and Society.” Thus, it’s only allowed if it’s needed for pedagogical purposes. I also signed: openletter.earth/open-letter-...

I gotta say I find a lot of AI discourse around higher ed very confusing. "if ChatGPT can write your essays is college even worth it?" did people think math teachers were assigning problem sets because *they* couldn't figure out the answers?
