@theferocity.bsky.social yes! Visit Canada! But check the weather first. Montreal can get very cold and snowy. Toronto has more of a damp/slush season.

Just a reminder that the notwithstanding clause is used when a government knows what they are doing not only is against people's Charter rights, but also is not a reasonable limit justified in a free and democratic society under section 1. #cdnpoli #ableg
Alberta's justice minister has tabled a bill to invoke the notwithstanding clause to shield a suite of legislation from legal challenges. The laws in question restrict the rights of transgender people in access to health care and sports, and affect K-12 education of all students.

The UCP's obsession with children's genitals should result in the same kind of shunning that happens to a weird cousin who asks all of the kids at a family BBQ what colour their underpants are.
This obsession with what's happening in the pants of children is unhealthy, predatory, and creepy as hell.

If you need to visit Toronto to get trans care for your kid, contact me and I’ll see if you can stay at my place while you have your medical appointments. I’m sorry I can’t help with the sports.
Today, Alberta introduced Bill 9 and invoked the notwithstanding clause to shield three anti-trans laws from constitutional challenge. These laws deny gender-affirming care to youth, erase 2SLGBTQI identities from schools, and ban trans girls and women from sports.

Look, I think it’s folly to monitor NYT coverage at this point but it just has to be said that the NYT covered those damn university president hearings BREATHLESSLY but the Epstein emails???? Crumbs. Even though I’m used to them being bootlickers, it’s still appalling to see.

This goes nicely with the “no, the NYT is a reputable newspaper - not unethical garbage” protestations we heard so much yesterday from their current and former contributors

This is so instructive about the reality distortion field that happens at the NYT. People inside really can't see the difference in what gets covered, and how, and how the amount of emphasis/focus changes what a story *is*. The example of the panic over trans kids is such an instructive case.

Note how this is obfuscating: "A guy emailing a reporter talking about old girlfriends or saying someone is 'dirty' is not a whole news story."

Guy 1: Notorious sexual offender.
Guy 2: Reporter at a leading national newspaper.
Guy 3: Candidate for president.
